NW accepts $1M water line grant

NEW WATERFORD– Village Council this week accepted funds for the second phase of water line replacement in the village.

Council approved a $1 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for phase II of the water line project, which calls for the replacement of 18,300 feet of metal pipes. Fiscal Officer Dave Slagle said bidding is expected in the upcoming summer.

The village is currently working on phase I of the project, which includes replacement of 12,300 feet of metal pipes between the water plant and water tower on Hatcher Road.

The entire project, consisting of both phases, is expected to cost $8 million and replace all the village’s severely aged cast iron lines which are clogged with more than 70 years of calcium deposits, resulting in low pressure and line breaks, according to village officials.

In other business, council approved a three-year contract with Fairfield Township to provide fire protection to the township for $35,000 annually.
