Columbiana teacher posts webinars as homework help

COLUMBIANA — A local elementary teacher is helping parents help their children with homework by posting brief webinars online.

Tyler Best, a third-grade teacher at Joshua Dixon Elementary, has seven instructional videos already uploaded to the elementary school website.

Best told the board of education this week that he decided to post videos to help parents help their children with homework and also as a way to refresh students on what they have learned.

The brief instructional videos explain methods being taught in the classroom, like the cube and map methods for word problems, and mental math.

The videos can be accessed by clicking on the third grade link on the elementary school’s website, then clicking on the Mr. Best link, and then the educational videos link on his personal classroom page.

In other business, the board approved:

— Audra Hatch as substitute teacher.

— Ryan Wolfe as head baseball coach and Jerry Beltempo as head varsity softball coach.

— James Hartshorn as athletic department volunteer.

— Membership in the Ohio School Boards Association for 2018 at a cost of $3,369.

— A memorandum of understanding between the district and Columbiana Local Association of School Support regarding staffing changes. The change will move a part-time secretary to an existing full-time secretary position that will be vacated due to the full-time secretary serving as the EMIS coordinator for the remainder of the year. The part-time secretarial position will be kept empty for now.

— A change in salary for Kendal Malsch from B.A. to M.A.

— The eighth grade field trip to Washington D.C. May 10-12.

— An executive session to discuss matters required to be kept confidential and specialized details of security arrangements. No action was taken.

During the reorganizational meeting before the regular meeting the board approved:

— Appointing Kelly Williamson as board president and Mark Hutson as board vice-president.

— Authorizing Superintendent Don Mook to accept resignations and hire staff between board meetings.

— Authorizing Treasurer Kathy Davies pay bills, modify appropriations, and other financial matters required by that position.

— The 2018 fee schedule for building use.

The next regular meeting was set for 6 p.m. Feb. 13.
