United Local program will help build character for seventh-graders

HANOVERTON — The United Local school board Wednesday night approved a new program focused on student character for the seventh grade.

The board granted approval for guidance counselor Lori Raymond to provide ANTI-VIRUS, a 10-week character education program that will be introduced in February.

According to high school Principal Bill Young, the program will be taught in a different seventh grade class/subject, using one class period per week. The seven main topics addressed are based on characteristics employers seek, including ambition, responsibility, hard work, emotion, restraint, common sense and generosity.

“It should be very good for our students,” Young noted.

Young said the program, including the cost of the trainer and all materials, is provided at a rate of $30 per student, but Greg Smith of Compco Industries in Columbiana is funding the program in the way of a sponsorship to provide it at United Local at no cost.

The instructor will be Tom Coffee, who has agreed to be trained in the character education program and who will be paid by the ANTI-VIRUS foundation.

Young noted 70 school districts in Ohio are currently using the same character education program which is recognized by the Ohio Department of Education as a Best Practices model.

More information on the program can be found online at www.antivirusyouth.org.
