Greier, Creer finalists for 2017 writing awards from the Ohio Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Salem News reporter Mary Ann Greier and managing editor J.D. Creer have been named finalists for writing awards in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2017 newspaper contest.

Greier is nominated for “Best News Writer” for her coverage of the Salem China fire, a fatal fire in Leetonia, the death of an area student due to illness and the counseling that followed at St. Paul School.

“Mary Ann Greier is truly deserving — as she has been in the past — for statewide recognition,” Creer said. “She ranks among the most devoted and productive staff members we have had at the Salem News during my 39 years here. I am very happy for her.”

Creer is recognized as “Best Editorial Writer” for opinion pieces concerning a proposed city charter for Salem, anti-bullying, drinking and driving and a repentant local resident who did damage years ago to a cemetery.

The sports staff, under the direction of sports editor Ron Firth and assistant sports editor Mike Burich, is nominated for best sports section.

The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places — will be announced during the Ohio APME annual awards banquet March 24 in Columbus.

Sixty-four daily newspapers submitted 1,922 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2017. Entries were judged by editors from The Detroit (Michigan) News, Division V; Digital First Media, Troy, Michigan, Division IV; the La Porte (Indiana) Herald-Argus and the Traverse City (Michigan) Record-Eagle, Division III; the Niagara-Gazette, Niagara Falls, New York and the Cadillac (Michigan) News, Division II; the Petoskey (Michigan) News-Review and the Ludington (Michigan) Daily News, Division I.

The Salem News is in Div. I which includes 41 of Ohio’s 80 daily newspapers.
