Emergency crews responded to a single-car accident in the 2800 block of East State Street at 3:13 p.m. Wednesday where the driver, who was eastbound, crossed the Cunningham Road intersection and went off the right side of the road, striking three utility poles before coming to a stop. Salem firefighters pried open both front doors with rescue tools to extricate the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver was transported to the hospital and life flighted to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police are withholding the name of the driver whose injuries were unknown. Traffic was tied up and businesses on the east side of the city were without power since transformers were knocked down. Ohio Edison crews turned off the power to the affected area until the damaged equipment was replaced. The accident is under investigation.
