Career Center staff raises, contracts OK’d
LISBON — The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center board approved a new contract with classified staff and hired several local companies to complete some building renovations again this year.
Superintendent Chuck Adkins said the three-year deal with the Associated Employees of the CCCTC begins July 1, 2018 and continues through June 30, 2021. It will include 3 percent raises per year on the base salary, which he said was similar to what the teachers received.
The staff members under this contract will see a few other changes such as reduction in the amount of time to file a grievance from 15 days to 10 days and a change in the amount of time someone can be recalled from a layoff changed from 18 months to six months, although Adkins said he hopes they never need to do that. Vacancies of positions will now be posted for five days instead of 10. Personal leave will be changed so the employees can roll over unused personal days into sick days and changes how they are paid for them.
Additionally, the classified employees will now pay $112 per month for their heath insurance for a family instead of $72 per month.
With plans to renovate the machining lab and to create even more parking for the ever growing number of students at the CCCTC, the board approved several construction contracts during their meeting.
The building construction contracts went to J. Herbert Construction, general trades, $199,800; Graft Electric, electrical work, $147,841; Ellyson Plumbing and Heating, plumbing, $51,915; and Standard Plumbing and Heating, HVAC, $67,427.
The parking lot contracts went to R.T. Vernal Paving and Excavating, Inc., paving, $258,248; and B&J Electric of Poland, Inc., parking lot electrical, $25,824.
In other matters:
— James Shaw of the State Auditor’s office presented Treasurer Katherine Mihalich with an the Auditor of State Award for the most recent audit at the CCCTC. Shaw pointed out about 6,000 entities are audited and less than 10 percent are given the award. Some of the things which qualify someone to receive the award includes their financial statements, no ethical referrals and submitting their numbers to the state in a timely fashion.
“It’s a great audit,” said Shaw, who is a Beaver Local alumni. “Kathy does a great job as treasurer.”
— The board approved a five-year forecast which shows an unreserved fund balance of $3.3 million in fiscal year 2018 and just over $3 million in 2022.
— The board also approved extending Adkins’ contract through June 30, 2024. When asked by board members about the extension of the contract for another five years past when the current one expires on June 30, 2019 and whether he wants to still continue until 2024, Adkins remarked “if the good Lord is willing.” He pointed out he loves what he does at the CCCTC.
“I think we’ve accomplished a lot of positive things, not because of me, but because of the whole team,” Adkins said. “Thank you very much for your support, and I look forward to doing the best I can.”
— Two cafeteria aides have been given the job security in knowing they will remain in their positions until they choose to leave. At that point, that position will not be rehired.
— The board hired Sandra Mele as an adult education nursing instructor and Carolyn McCune as Adult Education LPN Coordinator. They gave certified/licensed contracts to James Bielik, Bill Burns, Richard DeSalvo, John Garwood, Huck Hughes, Williams Jones, Kristen Ours, J.R. Straley and Elizabeth Zimmerman. Additionally, the board approved more than 30 people to serve as adult education instructors for the 2018-19 school year.
— The board approved four students to be summer workers with the building and grounds crew at the CCCTC — Zach Cannon, Terrell Hunt, Jacob Roush and Brandon Smith.
— The board approved 19 people as certified/licensed substitutes and eight people as classified substitutes for next school year.
