66 workers detained in ICE raid on Fresh Mark released so far

Staff Reports

SALEM — Of the 146 people taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a raid at the Fresh Mark in Salem on Tuesday, more than 60 have been released.

The paper’s news partner, WKBN First News, reported on Thursday that ICE reported roughly 66 detainees were processed and released for “humanitarian purposes.”

After 45 detainees were released, Sister Rene Weeks with the St. Paul Catholic Church told WKBN that not all of them were illegal.

She said most of those 45 detainees were in the country legally but were taken on Tuesday because they didn’t have the necessary documents on them during the raid.

Weeks serves as director of Hispanic ministry for St. Paul, which is providing help for many Guatemalan families, according to the WKBN report.

The report also said that there are still about 80 people being held, with the men at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center and the women at Geauga County Jail.
