SALEM — The Seventh Annual Cruzin’ for a Cauze car show to help the Christina House battered women’s shelter rolls into the Cigarette World parking lot off of East State Street and Cunningham Road from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re just happy to give back to the community,” Cigarette World store manager Sam Burkey said.

Since day one, the focus has been to raise money to help women and children who stay in the shelter and to educate people that the shelter exists and could use some help, she explained.

Funding isn’t what it used to be and the shelter needs help, both financially and with donations of personal care items, paper products and child care products such as diapers and baby wipes.

“Unfortunately with the financial problems from today’s economy, domestic violence is on the rise. This shelter provides a safe place for women and children to be able to go in times of trouble,” she wrote in a letter to solicit contributions of gift baskets or donations.

Last year’s event raised $2,000 and overall more than $10,000 has been generated through the various raffles and car registrations over the years. Major sponsors this year include J. Moresky & Sons Inc., Valley Tobacco, Altadis USA, Drew Estate, Vapor Beast, J.C. Newman Cigar Co., General Cigar Company, Ohio Lottery, East of Chicago Pizza, State Street Tattoo, Home Savings, Tight Spot Security, Hardkore Ink, Great Clips and State Street Salon.

“We’re happy for the support we get from the community and our vendors,” Cigarette World owner David Newman said.

Registration is $5 and the first 20 registered will receive a free gift bag. Participants are asked to register from 1:30 to 2 p.m. the day of the show or by calling ahead at 330-332-2311. Trophies will be awarded for first and second place and then plaques for peoples’ choice, best paint and most original.

There will be music and prize giveaways, free little cigars, scratch tickets and vapor liquids while supplies last, a free customer raffle and all customers receive one free raffle ticket. Tickets for both the 50/50 and the raffle baskets are $1 each, six for $5 or 30 tickets for $20. Hot dogs, chips and pop will be available for purchase.

Raffle tickets can be purchased now at Cigarette World, 2789 E. State St., across from Walmart.

Burkey said the store is also a drop-off location for the shelter for much-needed personal care items, such as shampoo and toothbrushes, paper products such as toilet paper and tissues and items for children or babies such as diapers and baby wipes. Anyone interested in making a larger monetary donation can contact the shelter at 330-420-0845. She noted the store won’t take clothing donations, but any clothing can be donated directly to the shelter.

Burkey said they’ll be happy to take any cars that want to stop out or people who just want to look at cars during the car show. She asked everybody to support the cause.
