Goshen road crew may work with county

GOSHEN TWP. –Township trustees this week purchased road repair materials and announced plans to share road work and equipment with the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office.

Trustees approved the purchase of two skids of crack sealing materials from DJL Materials at approximately $2,835. DJL will provide training on the loaned equipment and help with the crack sealing until township personnel are familiar with the process.

Additionally, trustee Chairman Bob McCracken reported the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office is drafting an agreement to allow the township to share road work and equipment with the county. The goal is to have both the township and county working together to complete work on ditches, berms, trees and other projects to better serve residents.

In other business, trustees promoted police officer Ryan McBride from part- to full-time and accepted the resignations of police officers Elizabeth Hughey and Michael Sherry.

Trustees also agreed to pursue an East Gate Clean Ohio grant to clean up the pond shoreline, remove small trees, eradicate muskrats, control algae and possibly dredge the pond at Bricker Park, per recommendations from the Soil and Water Conservation District. Trustee Todd Beeson also said he will speak with Fender Fish Farm regarding solar powered air stones designed to put oxygen back into the water at the pond.

Also at the meeting, Recycling Coordinator Paul Manypenny reported the vendor cost for recycling old televisions (non flat screen) has increased considerably to $25 this year. Trustees agreed to charge $20 each for the fall electronics drive, with the difference made up from Green Team funds.

Manypenny also reported the charges for tire collection will be $2 for passenger tires ($2.25 on the rim), $8 for semi trucks ($8.50 on the rim), $55 for tractor tires ($60 on the rim), $25 for racing slicks, $8 for skid loader tires and $25 for off road tires. The prices and information will be posted on the township website.

Additionally, trustee Teresa Stratton reported a circus will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. July 28 at Bunker Hill Park in addition to a steak fry hosted by the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.

McCracken reported he and fiscal officer Tom Knoedler will be meeting with representatives from the Mahoning County Land Bank and treasurer’s office to discuss tax delinquent properties and how the township can assist in eliminating them. He said many of the delinquencies are seven to 10 years without payment.

The next regular trustees meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the administration building.
