United BOE to keep deputy in school

HANOVERTON — The United school board Wednesday night approved a contract to retain a school resource officer for the 2018-2019 school year.

The board approved a contract with the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office for school resource officer services at a cost of $40 per hour, with the district setting the hours. Schools Superintendent Lance Hostetler said the board is considering an eight-hour day for the officer.

The board approved an school resource officer from the sheriff’s office for the second semester of the previous school year, but funding concerns with the sheriff’s office left the return of an SRO in doubt for this school year.

With the return of an SRO uncertain, the board last month approved the creation of a security officer position that will provide a peace officer trained individual to be employed by the district directly. Hostetler said candidates will still be interviewed for the security officer position to be used for additional security or when the SRO is not available.

In other business, the board renewed its rental agreement with the Columbiana County Community Action Agency providing a classroom in the Brautigam Center for the Head Start program for the 2018-2019 school year at a cost of $900 per month. The program is a full day, five days a week program.

The board also approved a contract with Homecare with Heart LLC, an Ohio Limited Liability Company (“HWH”), to provide nursing services for individual students who are the responsibility of the school district from Aug. 27, 2018 through May 30, 2019.

Additionally the board accepted donations of $5,000 to the United Eagle Scholarship program from an anonymous donor, $200 to the cheerleaders from the Lisbon Eagles for online auction items and $100 to the Cheerleaders from Minor Insurance for online auction items.

The board also approved chartered bus trips for the 2018-2019 school year including senior class to Cedar Point, eighth-grade class to Washington, D.C., Prom, band to Niagara Falls and choir to Columbus.
