Expansion to claim part of Columbiana street

COLUMBIANA — A local manufacturing company plans to expand.

City Council gave a first reading to legislation this week to vacate 331 feet of West Railroad Street in order for Columbiana Boiler to construct a new building.

Vacating the road was first discussed at the Sept. 11 planning commission meeting in which Chuck Gorby of Columbiana Boiler said it is the first step of a planned expansion of the business.

According to minutes of that meeting, Gorby, Commission member Rick Noel and City Manager Lance Willard said they all spoke with neighboring Compco Industries about the plans and the company has no concerns with the road closure.

During the meeting, the commission approved a motion to recommend that city council vacate the portion of West Railroad Street with a three-year construction date for the state of the business.

According to its website, Columbiana Boiler was founded in 1894 and manufactures specialty cylinders, tanks and pressure vessels to transport pressurized gases and liquids.

The company is also able to custom design and fabricate heavy-plate products of all types.

In other business, council approved:

— A request from Kelli McCoy for Columbiana Cub Scout Pack 16 to hold tag days in the city from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct. 20 for its annual popcorn sales.

— A request from Marti Noles to change the North Elm Street block party date from Sept. 29 to Oct. 13. Times are 4 to 7:30 p.m.

— Resolutions accepting the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor.

— A resolution authorizing the city manager to execute an agreement with the Huntington National Bank to obtain a credit card for the city, to fall in line with House Bill 312.

— An executive session to discuss pending litigation. No action was taken.
