Salem man charged with sexual offenses against 3 young girls

LISBON — An 80-year-old Salem man charged with sexual-related crimes involving young girls was taken into custody on Tuesday on a secret indictment issued last week by the county grand jury.

Nelson H. Walter, South Avenue, is charged with one count of rape and four counts of gross sexual imposition.

Salem Police Detective David Talbert said the investigation was conducted after one of the children told someone at school, which resulted in Children Services being contacted. The children are related to each other.

The alleged rape crime went from 2011 through 2012,

starting when the child was 5 or 6 years old. Additional dates involving the same girl was for alleged contact from 2011 through 2016 and again in July and August of 2017 when the child was 12 years old.

Additionally, Walter is accused of having sexual contact with another child starting in 2007, when the child would have been about 6 or 7, and continuing through 2009. Finally, Walter is accused of having sexual contact with the third victim beginning in 2003 through 2006, starting when the child would have been 6 or 7 years old.

Walter was released on bond with a condition he have no contact with any children or witness in the case. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 27.
