YOUNGSTOWN — The Dana School of Music announces a concert by the Youngstown State University (YSU) Concert Band, Brandt Payne, conductor, YSU Wind Ensemble, Stephen L. Gage, conductor, and the 2018 YSU High School Side-By-Side Honors Wind Ensemble. The public is invited at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students from other schools, and free for anyone with a YSU identification.

Twenty area high school band programs are represented by students who will perform alongside the YSU Wind Ensemble during the final portion of the concert. “This is a fabulous way for high school students to experience all that goes into a college performance,” said Gage. “They will sit right beside our Dana School of Music students on the Stambaugh stage during a rehearsal and performance. Our students and faculty will work with them throughout this process to showcase the level of musicianship necessary for one of our performances.”

The YSU Concert Band will open the performance with a repertoire including Frank Ticheli’s Joy Revisited, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Suite, arranged by Clare Grundman and March Grandioso by Roland Seitz, arranged by Alfred Reed.

Following the Concert Band, the YSU Wind Ensemble will open its portion of the program with Antonin Dvorak’s Carnival Overture as set by former YSU Professor of Theory and Composition, Dr. Mark Walker. Dr. Walker was a faculty member from 1968-1985, and this transcription was first performed by the YSU Wind Ensemble.

Graduate assistant Ryan Dutton will conduct Henry Fillmore’s exciting march, Rolling Thunder with Paul Dooley’s Mavericks next. This virtuosic work was described by the composer as a “concerto for wind ensemble,” reminding the listener of some of the rhythmic grooves of the 1980’s funk bands.

The Wind Ensemble will close its portion of the concert with Michael Giacchino’s exciting The Incredibles. This 2004 movie soundtrack was deftly arranged by Takashi Hoshide for the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.

After a brief intermission, the 91-member combined YSU Wind Ensemble and High School Side-By-Side Honors Wind Ensemble will open their performance with Frank Ticheli’s poignant An American Elegy. This work was written as a commission by Columbine High School (CO) on the heels of its 1999 tragedy. The concert will conclude with John Barnes Chance’s first composition, Incantation and Dance.

The 20 high schools band programs represented in the honors wind ensemble and their directors follow:

Austintown-Fitch High School, Wesley O’Connor; Bethel Park High School, Chad Thompson; Boardman High School, Thomas Ruggeri, Tim Tuite and Michael Shevock; Champion High School, Tyler Husosky; Edgewood High School, Connie Sommers; Grove City Area High School, John Habarka; Howland High School, Gregory Rezabek, Sarah Penney and Shawn Reynolds; Hubbard High School, Daniel Nestich and Andrea Lewis; Kent Theodore Roosevelt High School, John Roebke; Laurel Area High School, Brian Croach and Nathan Daubenspeck; Leetonia High School, Randall Rodik; Lowellville High School, Robert Antonucci; Mathews High School, Hailey Baker; Mohawk High School, John Zeh; Sharon High School, Brad Volek; Shenango High School, Douglas Butchey; South Range High School, Jeffrey DeCesare and John Veneskey; Valley Christian High School, Joseph Kane; Warren G.
