Salem Twp. approves spending for road gear

FRANKLIN SQUARE — Salem Township trustees approved spending $2,762 for the purchase of a new cylinder arm for the Case mini-excavator, during Tuesday’s meeting.

Road Foreman Jason Entrikin said the cylinder can be purchased through Southeastern Equipment Co. and Trustee Chairman John Wilms said, “I say we get it as soon as we can” and Trustee Bill Heston agreed, “Let’s get it.”

In other business, trustees discussed fuel purchases at different suppliers at various prices.

Entrikin said he would call them in the morning asking if he could make purchases from different places and Fiscal Officer Cathy Wilms said she needed paperwork from new vendors.

She asked Entrikin about a purchase order and he said he needed to call one other supplier “to see if we can get it all from one place.”

He said prices varied from $2.17 to $2.39 a gallon adding, “I know at Thanksgiving it will go up.”

Also, Entrikin said he didn’t expect to be doing culvert, ditches and pipe work this late but said the trucks are ready for snow plowing with winter weather approaching.

A weather advisory was issued Wednesday for Thursday morning.

In response to a question about what time he usually went out plowing on snow mornings, Entrikin said, “I go out about 4 a.m.” explaining that it takes 3.5 hours to plow both ways.

“I usually go out at 4 a.m.-4:30 a.m.,” he said, “I don’t want to go out too early and usually by 10 a.m. you’ve done as much as you can.”

Constable Dan Valentine continues to advise motorists to be on the look out for deer.

“They’re very bad this year,” Valentine said, “seems like they’ve been running a lot more earlier. They’re all over and it doesn’t matter if it’s night or day.”

Valentine explained that if a motorist strikes a deer they need to pull their vehicle off to the side of the road and turn their four-way flashers on.

“We don’t want anyone walking on the road and getting hit. At least by getting four-flashers on it lets other motorists know something’s going on,” Valentine said, especially if a motorist just crested a hill.

If a motorist strikes a deer Valentine refers them to their insurance company and if they need a report he will provide on. Valentine said he has received calls from residents who find dead deer in their front yards, the result of being struck by a vehicle.

“No one comes and claims them,” Valentine said, adding that other law enforcement agencies have call lists to claim carcasses if the motorist doesn’t want it.

In other township business, Cathy Wilms advised trustees about receiving correspondence from the Columbiana County Township Association regarding its annual Christmas dinner on Dec. 5 and the Winona Fire Department, which will hold its Christmas dinner on Dec. 8.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 27.
