South Range BOE approves transportation change

BEAVER TWP. — The South Range school board this week approved a change at the top of the transportation department.

The board accepted the resignation of Ryan Dunn as director of transportation effective Feb. 1 after he took a position with Boardman Local Schools. The board then approved Paul Cubick as interim director of transportation effective Feb. 4 through June 30 at an hourly rate of $20.

Additionally, the board approved Robert Donaldson as bus dispatcher for the 2018-2019 school year at an hourly rate of $12.50.

In other personnel business, the board increased the pay for substitute teachers to $75 per day after 10 consecutive days worked. The board last year began paying substitute teachers $70 daily, a $5 increase from previous years, to help attract applicants.

The board also granted supplemental coaching contracts for 2018-2019 to Chloe Morrow for girls varsity track, Hayli Davidson for girls assistant track, Joe Brooks for boys assistant track, Clyde Beaver for middle school boys track, Danielle Buzzacco for middle school girls track, Krista Butcher for middle school assistant track, Ryan Miller for assistant baseball, Dan Macinga for assistant baseball, William Sattler for assistant baseball, Jodine Pilmer for musical director and Diane Krumpack for varsity cross country (2019-2020 school year), and approved as unpaid volunteer coaches for 2018-2019 Donnee Feren for varsity softball, Diane Krumpak for girls track and Krumpak, Joe Brooks and Mark Bush for indoor track.

Additionally the board hired Ed Schaefer Jr. for snowplowing services and Paul Munson for DJ services for the 2018-2019 school year.

Also at the meeting, the board directed Treasurer Jim Phillips to advertise for bids on a new 72 passenger conventional school bus. It will be the first bus purchase since 2016, according to schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham, who said the district should ideally purchase a new bus each year.

“We need to keep the bus fleet up to speed,” he said, noting some buses are over 20 years old.

The board also granted permission for the South Range High School’s Speech and Debate Team to travel to Massillon to participate in the Ohio High School Speech League State Championship Feb. 28 through March 2. Students will be transported by district authorized transportation and will be supervised by chaperones and advisors at all times during the trip.

The board also appointed board members Terri Lally and Taylor Christian as Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) legislative liaison and student achievement liaison, respectively, for the 2019 calendar year.

During reports from the principals, Elementary Principal Steve Matos recognized Boy Scout Troop 80 of North Lima for building and donating four picnic tables for the playground. He said the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) provided a covered area for shade during recess last year where the new tables will be located.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 18 in the high school auditorium.
