Police investigate Columbiana death

COLUMBIANA — City police are investigating an incident that stopped traffic at the Main Street intersection near Newton’s Service Station on Thursday.

Police Chief Tim Gladis said police were notified about 4:15 p.m. that a woman in a vehicle behind a pickup truck at the light at the triangle intersection of North Main and state Route 164 went up to check on the driver after the pickup did not proceed through the intersection after the traffic light changed a few times.

“She went up to check and found a man with injuries to his head. We did find a gun inside the truck. He was deceased,” Gladis said.

Police did not release the man’s identity that evening, as relatives were still being notified. He did say the man lived just outside city limits.

When asked if police were investigating it as a suicide, Gladis said, “It’s a death investigation. We will follow wherever it leads. At this point, we have nothing that leads us to suspect foul play. We would await a coroner’s ruling that would speak to manner and cause of death.”

The pickup truck was towed from the scene.

Gladis also said police handled two other minor traffic crashes near the scene around that time, although whether they were related to the incident was not clear.

No injuries were reported in those crashes, he said.
