NORTH GEORGETOWN–The state fire marshal Friday ruled an undetermined cause in the fire that destroyed a landmark restaurant early Friday morning.

North Georgetown Fire Chief Ed Reichenbach said the cause of the fire that destroyed the Old Stagecoach Inn is undetermined but is not suspicious in nature. Officials said the fire could have started in the kitchen.

The building is being considered a total loss. Reichenbach said the building’s owner will have to discuss with the insurance company what to do with the remaining structure.

The fire department responded to the restaurant at 10:30 p.m. Thursday and remained on scene until about 3:30 a.m. Firefighters returned shortly thereafter when the fire rekindled and finally cleared the scene at roughly 6 a.m., Reichenbach said.

Assisting departments included Homeworth, Sebring, Beloit, Damascus, Winona and Washington Township.

The restaurant was closed at the time of fire. There were no injuries reported.

The inn was built in 1822 by Samuel Long and was on the National Registry of Historic Sites. The building was also used as part of the Underground Railroad.
