United school calendar OK’d

HANOVERTON–The United Local school board this week approved the school calendar for 2019-2020.

The calendar includes the first day for students on Aug. 22, last day for students on May 29 and commencement on May 24.

In his recommendation, schools Superintendent Lance Hostetler said the board selected a calendar that “fit(s) the needs of the United community and reflects the recommended shared services county calendar.”

In other business, granted continuing contracts to certified staff members Nome Baker, Danielle Burch, Valerie Kidder, Abigail Walkama and Erin Young, as well as a supplemental coaching contract to Justin Mitchell for junior high wrestling for the 2018-2019 school year. The board also approved the retire/rehire of Mike Ward as a part-time business and health teacher on a one-year limited contract for the 2019-2020 school year and hired Justin Keir and Alex Gonzalez as student technology assistants for the spring musical.

Also at the meeting, the board agreed to continue with The Nutrition Group as food service provider for the 2019-2020 school year and updated the agreement with the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency to aid in the event of an emergency, with no change from the previous agreement.

Additionally the board accepted donations of $400 from the United PTO to the eighth-grade Washington D.C. trip, $333.70 miscellaneous to Ruriteens for Pennies for Patients, $20 anonymously to the Drama Club, $100 from Mary VanBuren to Academic Challenge, $200 from Guilford Lake Ruritans to Academic Challenge, $100 from Jim Means to Academic Challenge, $150 from G&G Machine to the Ski Club, $200 from Bob and Linda Sebo to the baseball program for Youngstown State University facility use, $85 from D.J. Ogilvie to the football program, a side of beef from Mike Ellyson to the football raffle fundraiser, $200 from various community members for the elementary backpack program, $535 from various community members in memory of D. Strudthoff for the backpack program; $150 from the PTO for teacher conference dinners and $894.72 from Tuscarawas Valley Heritage for the fifth-grade Zoar Village field trip.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 15 in the high school library.
