School board OKs teacher, staff raises

SALEM

The Salem school board Wednesday night approved new contracts with the teachers and classified staff unions.

The board approved three-year contracts with the Salem Education Association effective Sept. 1, 2019 through Aug. 31, 2022 and the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 215 effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2022. In the contracts, teachers will receive pay increases of 1 percent, .75 percent and .75 percent over the three years while classified staff will receive hourly pay increases of 38 cents, 36 cents and 34 cents over the course of their contract.

Board President LuAnn Haddad complimented both associations for their dedication and commitment to the school district, students and community, noting the importance of having the contracts in place before the school year.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Shivers praised both associations for being focused on what matters.

“It’s not just on their own pocketbook, their own jobs, but on what’s best for the kids, what’s best for the district,” he said. “I feel it is certainly a fair deal for everyone.”

In other business the board approved a continuing contract for kindergarten teacher Kary (Welker) Solis and hired Marshall Sarginger as ISS/On-Track supervisor at the high school and Stephanie Putzier for integrated math in grades seven to 12.

The board also granted a supplemental contract to Christijana Vucenovic for honor society for 2018-2019 school year and supplemental contracts for the 2019-2020 school year to Elaine Habeger for Interact, Amy Johnson for Pep Club as well as supplemental coaching contracts for the 2019-2020 school year for volleyball to Allie Winner for ninth-grade coach, Brittany Zamarelli for ninth-grade assistant coach, McKenzie Patterson for eighth-grade coach and Elizabeth Christani for seventh-grade coach; boys basketball to Derek Frederick and Corey Wonner; and weight room supervisor to Marshal Sarginger.

The board also approved the following staff members for Kindergarten Camp: Jen Andres,Title I; Christi Arnoto, teacher; Susan Slopek, teacher; Shari McKarns, nurse; Suzanne Hritz, nurse; Julie Hochadel, teacher; Lisa Miller, teacher; Tori Paolucci, speech teacher; Kary Solis, teacher; Melinda Westbrook, teacher; Paula Wonner, teacher; and Regina Ziegler, Title I.

Additionally the board accepted the resignation of Matthew F. Ziegler from his teaching contract, Melissa Thompson as art teacher at Buckeye and Reilly elementary schools and Brittany Zamarelli as ninth-grade volleyball head coach.

The board also hired for the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing (HEMSPN) Jamie Pytash as full-time instructor and Shayna Glista as per diem instructor and granted pay increases for HEMSPN staff members DeAnn Russell, full-time administrative assistant, and Debra Baker, full-time administrative assistant and financial aide advisor.
