Eight local schools awarded CASH health, wellness funding
LISBON — The Coordinated Action for School Health (CASH) Coalition recently awarded health and wellness funding for eight local school projects. The awards range in funding from $1,000 to $2,000 and will help schools implement student wellness activities with projects that target one or more health priority areas identified in the 2022 Columbiana County Health Needs Assessment. This year, the Bonnie Hoppel School Health Project Awards have also offered a category for student leadership opportunities.
The 2022-2023 project award winners are: The Columbiana County Educational Opportunity Center; Columbiana Exempted Village, Joshua Dixon; East Liverpool City School, Westgate; Lisbon Exempted Village, David Anderson; Salem, Jr./Sr. High; two projects from United Local, and Wellsville Local, Garfield Elementary.
The funded projects will support multiple wellness initiatives, including physical fitness and social skill building materials, an edible school garden, an after-school run club, a school day addressing mental health and self-care, materials for team building and emotional health, a school hydroponic garden, a student run food pantry, and incentives for positive behavior.
The awards have benefited Columbiana County schools for 15 years and have reached over 20,000 students. To date, 132 awards have been presented to improve student health. This year, partners on the CASH Coalition provided over $11,500 in school health project funding.
Funding for the projects is provided by Akron Children’s Hospital, Columbiana County Health District, Columbiana County Educational Service Center, East Liverpool City Hospital, and Salem Regional Medical Center. For information, contact Melissa Galbreath, CASH Coalition, at 330-424-9591 x185.
