Weir earns Achievement Academy award

COLUMBIANA- The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Haile Weir has been named a national award winner in recognition of the satisfactory fulfillment of the requirements pertaining to this honor. She is a student in Salem City Schools. Honorees are nominated by a teacher, counselor, coach or community leader.

Haile is the daughter of Michael and Kimberly Weir of Columbiana, the granddaughter of Edward and Maryann Manning of Salem and the great-granddaughter of Donna Manning of Salem. She is also the granddaughter of David and Victoria Weir of Lisbon.

Mitchell named National Merit Scholarship finalist

BELOIT – Madeline Mitchell, a senior at West Branch High School, has been named a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

She is the daughter of Dr. Daniel and Rhonda Mitchell of Beloit.

Smith earns dean’s list at St. Mary’s College

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – St. Mary’s College has named Rebecca Smith to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester.

Smith is the daughter of Victoria Smith of Rogers. To earn academic honors at St. Mary’s, a student must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, have at least 12 graded credit hours, no incompletes, and no grades lower than a C.

Richards named to Dominican dean’s list

COLUMBUS – Alan Richards of Minerva has been named to the fall semester 2012 dean’s list at Dominican University.

Ohio Dominican University is a four-year private comprehensive liberal arts and master’s institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic Dominican tradition.

James achieves dean’s list at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA – Elizabeth James, a Baldwin Wallace University junior early childhood education major, has been placed on the dean’s list for the 2012 fall semester.

EP band members excel in competition

EAST PALESTINE – The East Palestine High School Band attended the Ohio Music Education Association District 8 Solo and Ensemble event on Feb. 2 at Glen Oak High School in Canton.

Receiving an excellent rating for their solos were: Logan Foster, Jacob Korzeniowski, Audrey Huddleston, Alec Dumbauld, Courtney Loyd, Elisha Jacobs, Cassie Drane and Emma Meckler.

South Range kindergarten registration set

BEAVER TOWNSHIP – Kindergarten registration for students in the South Range Local School District will be taken the week of March 4-8.

ASHLAND – Two local residents have been accepted into Ashland University for the fall 2013 semester:

– Lindsay Barth of Salem will receive a Provost’s Scholarship of $13,000 annually to attend Ashland University. She is a senior at Salem High School.

– Connor Sharp of Salem will receive a Director’s Scholarship of $12,000 annually to attend Ashland University. Sharp is a senior at West Branch High School.

TIFFIN – Theresa Scott of Canfield was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Tiffin University.

Literacy fun event planned March 12 at Crestview

COLUMBIANA – Crestview Elementary Title 1 and HOSTS students and family members will experience a fun filled evening at the second literacy fun event at 6:30 p.m. March 12.

Special guests, Associate Professor of Music and Choral Director Brenda Luggie, a Crestview graduate; and Adjunct Professor Amanda Peavyhouse will be performing.

Professor Luggie directs two choral ensembles at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn., as well as teaching voice, vocal survey and solo performance lab.

In addition to the special performance by Luggie and Peavyhouse, there will be games, a craft for everyone, special treats, a learning packet for home, and prizes.

The book featured will be Pet of the Met, by Don Freeman. Pet of the Met is a story about a family of mice, a cat, a prince, a magic flute, a serpent, a bird catcher, and beautiful music. In preparation for the evening Crestview Elementary Title 1 and HOSTS students will be learning about Mozart, The Magic Flute, and Pet of the Met.

Haueter earns master’s degree from Clarion Univ.

CLARION, Pa. – Kayla Haueter of Hanoverton received a master’s of science degree in library science during commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at Clarion University.

GED testing will be held Feb. 19-20 at Choffin Center

YOUNGSTOWN – Official GED testing, sponsored by Choffin Career and Technical Adult Education Department, will be held at 8:45 a.m. Feb. 19 and 20 at Choffin Career and Technical Center.

West Branch Band members excel during competition

BELOIT – Members of the West Branch High School Band performed at the Ohio Music Education Association’s Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event on Jan. 27 at Western Reserve High School. Students from area schools throughout Ashtabula, Mahoning and Trumbull counties participated in this annual activity.

Earning Superior Ratings were soloists Keilah Mason, Hanna Morelli, Justin Salancy, Zach Haberland, David Evert, Heather Ashworth, Elizabeth Jarvis, Brianna Rzucidlo, Danny Schlueter, Valerie Weingart, Tori Skolosh, Shaynna Jarvis, Megan Winters, Sarah Pigza, Lindsey Fugett, Lauren Stitle, Sadie Fuson and Kaitlyn Phillips along with members of Flute Trios #1 and #3, Clarinet Quartet #1, the Woodwind Quintet, the Saxophone Quartet, the Brass Choir, and the Percussion Ensemble.

Randolph chosen as Ohio rep at National Youth Delegate

FAIRFAX, Va. – Dillon Randolph of Columbiana, a student at Columbiana High School, has been selected to represent Ohio as a National Youth Delegate at the 2013 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.

Randolph has been awarded the opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation. Randolph was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

George Mason University along with partners, National Geographic and the National Zoo are excited to welcome the nation’s youth scholars to Washington, D.C. With distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners, the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment offers aspiring environmentalists and student leaders an unparalleled experience. The week-long program is held at George Mason University’s state-of-the-art campus. The Summit will encourage and inspire young leaders who desire a unique experience focused on successful careers in this dynamic industry. The Washington Youth Summit on the Environment will be held June 23-28.
