Western Reserve Rangers learn about dahlias

BERLIN CENTER – Linda and Stan Vuletich were guest speakers at the April Meeting of Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club. They gave a power point presentation about the history and growing of dahlia flowers. Dahlia tubers, to be planted this spring, were given to everyone in attendance.

Congratulations was extended to Levi Smith and Jena Styka who were elected vice president and secretary of the 2013 Mahoning County Junior Fair Board. Other Ranger members serving on the board this year are Gabriella and Nickolas Marinescu and Emily Smith.

Levi Smith reminded everyone to check out Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club on Facebook. Upcoming county as well as Ranger 4-H Club events will be posted regularly.

Reese Snyder was recognized for coming up with an idea to collect spare change for the homeless and the Second Harvest Food Bank. Reese had the assistance of three fourth grade classmates who called the project called “Change for Change.”

The following members gave reports from County 4-H Clubs. A guest speaker, who gave advice about getting chicks for the 4-H Poultry Project, was a feature of the April County Poultry Club meeting. Nolan Snyder said the County Swine Club also had a speaker who talked about how to show your pig and keep it under control in the show ring. Emily Smith shared that community service projects and fun activities were being planned by the County 4-H Junior Leader Club. Gabriella Marinescu stated that the County 4-H Fashion Board was finalizing plans for the July Style Revue, discussing field trips and community service projects too.

Cloverbud advisor Amanda Majirsky noted that the next Cloverbud meeting will be the last Saturday in April and the March meeting was well attended. Jena Styka read a thank-you letter from the Easter egg hunt committee and reminded the members of the many county judging dates.

Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 9. Club officers will give demonstrations to assist members with presenting their projects at small project judging interviews and helping those with small animal projects prepare for small animal judging Interviews.
