Kitchen Plus Garden creating cooking class will be held on Aug. 27
NORTH LIMA – The second of four Kitchen Plus Garden classes on creative cooking of fresh and local seasonal fruits and vegetables will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 27 at Common Ground Church, 2310 W. South Range Road. The sessions are provided by Goodness Grows, the outreach ministry of the church.
Co-teachers Sophia Buggs of Youngstown and Ellen Bowman of Greenford will greet participants in the garden area to review what’s fresh and in season, describing crop care tips and knowing when and how to pick.
The class will move next to the kitchen to make and taste raw kale salad, parmesan string beans, ratatouille (a skillet vegetable medley), and an easy fruit cobbler. These are representative of simple recipes that are attractive, good-tasting and healthy for families. Bowman brings her Mennonite and global food interests, while urban farmer Buggs adds African-American heritage and pro-vegetable accents.
Other classes will be held Sept. 24 and Oct. 22. Cost is $25 per session, $60 for the remaining three classes if paid by the next session.
The series is a partnership with Northern Columbiana County Habitat for Humanity, where Marcia Hazel heads up the support committee for the Habitat homeowners. She is seeking sponsors to provide scholarships to expand attendance to the sessions, which are designed to empower participants to improve the quality, healthfulness and enjoyment of the food they choose. Contact Hazel at 330-540-9142. Call 330-549-9408 to register, or call Greg Bowman at 610-413-3196 for further details. The church is located in the former Mellinger’s Nursery building on Route 165.
