Salem Historical Society recognizes veterans, county Medal of Honor recipients

The Salem Historical Society’s November meeting featured veterans with special emphasis on the Columbiana County Medal of Honor recipients. The program was presented by Derek Coffee who has researched the contributions of 10 local servicemen who have earned this distinguished award. Coffee shared the actions of these and others that led to this recognition. It was suggested to visit for stories of the over 3,400 servicemen to be honored for this service. The most recent honored include Ralph Dias buried in Leetonia and Melvin Newlin of Wellsville. Others on the county listing are Joseph Davis buried in East Palestine; John Gaunt in Damascus; Abraham Greenawalt in Alliance; Jesse Barrick in Washington; Louis Renninger in Oregon; William Surles in East Liverpool; Nelson Ward in California; and Robert Wood in Hanoverton.
