South Range student

wins essay writing contest

BEAVER TWP. – “The storm clouds rolled in, toppling over one another as they fought for dominance in the darkened sky, fighting and clashing with terrifying growls and booms.” This is the opening sentence from Hannah Ferenchak’s winning essay for the Jewish Community Relations Council’s (JCRC) Holocaust Writing Contest. Ferenchak, an eighth grader at South Range Middle School, was the co-winner of the seventh and eighth-grade essay division for the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys.

She will receive her award at the JCRC’s annual Holocaust Commemoration program at noon Tuesday at the Mahoning County Courthouse.

The theme for this year’s essay was “Confronting the Holocaust: American Responses.” Ferenchak’s story, “When the Saints Came Marching In,” is a first person point of view of a child hiding in the barracks of a concentration camp as the Allied forces liberate her camp.

Her teacher, Gwen Spitz, challenged her and other members of the school’s Power of the Pen team to enter the contest. “Our language arts classes have been studying the Holocaust and reading the play, ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’ and we recently visited the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Cleveland to hear a first-person survivor’s account, so at this point they all had background knowledge they could bring to their stories,” said Spitz.

East Liverpool City’s 8 mill fire protection levy renewal

Madison Township’s 2 mill road levy renewal

Madison Township’s 0.5 mill road levy renewal

United Local School District’s 3 mill permanent improvement levy renewal

Wellsville Local School District’s 2 mill permanent improvement levy renewal

Additional donations made to

county fair’s grandstand project

LISBON – On Monday, the Columbiana County Fairboard announced two $50,000 gifts from the Richard F. Wilk Jr. family and the families behind Hanover Farms, the Zehentbauers, that moved the Columbiana County Fair’s grandstand project closer to its goal of $900,000. The Wilk family gift will create a winner’s circle where winners of any competition will be photographed and recognized. “My family has been blessed in many ways, and we are thrilled to be in a position to support the Columbiana County Fair,” said Dick Wilk, a lifelong resident of Columbiana County who founded Specialty Ceramics Inc. and Refractory Specialties Inc. in the early 1990s. Both companies were sold in 2011, but he still manages them.

The Neil and Richard Zehentbauer families of Hanover Farms decided to name the 240-square foot press box that will sit atop the new grandstand. The family grew up attending and participating at the fair. “We have worked hard and been fortunate as a family, so we loved the idea of helping the fair achieve their goal of having the grandstand up in time for this year’s fair,” said Zehentbauer.

The fairboard razed the aging grandstand on Dec. 14, 2013. The new grandstand will seat 2,500, which is 1,100 more than the previous seating. “The new grandstand will allow us to think outside of the traditional box when it comes to entertainment and other activities, even outside of fair week,” said John Wolf, fairboard president.

Fairboard members hope the community will continue to step forward with many more gifts, big or small, to help reach the goal. “The donations have ranged from $20 to $300,000. We are so grateful for the support, and we are in need of them all,” said Tresa Unkefer, fairboard secretary. This year’s fair is July 28-Aug. 3. For more information call 330-424-5531.
