Author addresses LCC grads
COLUMBIANA – Michael Ross, author of The Character Deficit and Columbiana County resident, was the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony for Leadership Columbiana County (LCC), held recently at Das Dutch Village Inn.
During this nine-month intensive classroom and hands on experience, students build leadership capabilities and attributes such as proper meeting facilitation, public speaking and project planning in addition to learning about the economic diversity and culture of Columbiana County.
Students experience collaboration, self-discovery and team growth during the first class which involves a Low Ropes Course. Subsequent focuses were agriculture, industrial and economic development, news media, poverty and community response, government, education, health and wellness and the legal system.
Other topics and presenters included Pete Conkle of Columbiana County Soil and Water Conservation, Jenny Pike of the Humane Society of Columbiana County, Dottie Kane, VIP Workplace Program, Federal Correctional Institution at Elkton, Salem Regional Medical Center, Kent State University Radiology and Nursing Program, Freshmark, Columbiana County Courthouse and WFMJ where a taping of the news and weather occurred.
The 2013-14 session culminated with two separate class projects by students. A Veteran’s stand down raised over $8000 which provided food supplies for 66 veteran households and 88 non-veteran households in Columbiana County for a total of 436 individuals receiving the benefits. Remaining funds were donated to the Community Action Agency to conduct future events. A concert with Cody Gibson raised over $1800 which was donated to Team MoJo which will fund music lessons to children who cannot afford them.
Leadership Columbiana County is a non-profit organization. The program is governed by a board of trustees and is self-sustained through tuition and corporate and community support. Class size is limited and recruitment is under way for the 2014-15 session which kicks off in September.
