Salem 1968 to meet at Ricky’s English Pub
SALEM — The Salem High School Class of 1968 will meet for dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Ricky’s English Pub.
Salem Masons offer breakfast buffet Saturday
SALEM–A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.
The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.
Banquet in Salem to feature fried chicken
SALEM — The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Next week’s sponsor is the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana. The menu offers fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, corn, cole slaw, fresh vegetables and fruit, and ice cream.

Salem Music Study Club to meet Oct. 26
SALEM — P.J. Devine, Ruth Newman and Brenda Bailey, dressed in witch costumes, will serve refreshments when the Salem Music Study Club meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in the parlor of the educational building beside the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Several members will provide a Halloween-like tribute for the program. Costumes are optional for members and guests. A brief meeting concerning various upcoming topics follows.
Trunk or Treat set at First United Methodist Church
SALEM –The First United Methodist Church at 244 S. Broadway Ave. will hold its annual Trunk or Treat from 5 to 6 p.m. Oct. 27, immediately preceding the Salem Halloween Parade. Children in costume, up to age 12, are invited to visit the trunks on the lot and collect treats. This event is free and open to the public.
Breakfast planned Oct. 29 at Concord Church
SALEM — An all-you-can-eat breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at Concord Church, 10013 Route 45 north of Salem. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for ages 5 to 12.
Salem Elks Trunk-o-Treat set Oct. 29
SALEM — The fifth annual Salem Elks Trunk-o-Treat will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the east parking lot. Participants with a vehicle must arrive by 12:30 p.m. The Drug Awareness Trailer and the Elks’ mascot Elroy the Elk with be featured. The Elks have also partnered with “Lemonade for Alex” to help combat childhood cancer and will have a Lemonade Stand set up. Prior to the event Operation Scare will distribute Halloween costumes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Elks Grillroom off the west side parking lot. All are welcome to attend.
Night at the Races to be held at Guilford Lake Grille
HANOVERTON — United Community Scholarship Foundation is hosting Night at the Races at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Guilford Lake Grille, 7094 E. Lake Road, Lisbon. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $12 at the door. All proceeds will be used for scholarships for United Local students. The event is open to ages 21 and over and offers 10 video horse races, raffles, poker, blackjack, a Chinese auction and appetizers.
Meetings to show benefits of UnitedHealthcare plan
SALEM — The Crabb Insurance Agency at 295 E. State St., Salem, and 367 N. Market St., East Palestine, is hosting free community meetings to learn how to get more benefits than you’re currently getting from original Medicare with a UnitedHealthcare Dual Complete® (HMO-POS SNP) plan.
Meetings begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 and 19 at Faith Chapel Fellowship, 511 E. Pershing St.; Nov. 29 and Dec. 1 at East Palestine Church of Christ; Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 at Lake Mount Church of Christ in New Waterford; and Nov. 30 and Dec. 6 at East Liverpool City Hospital. Eastern Gateway Foundation to offer scholarships
BERHOLZ — Eastern Gateway Community College Foundation Inc. will celebrate the college’s 50th anniversary by offering 50 new $5,000 named scholarships by 2018. The non-profit organization exists exclusively for advancing the various causes of the college and its students.
Bergholz Community Foundation in Bergholz presented Dr. James Baber with a check for scholarship purposes. The foundation established this scholarship in 2005. The foundation’s goal is to assist residents of the Edison Local School District pursuing an associate’s degree or certificate. Recipient must have a 2.5 grade point average or above in high school or previous college work. The scholarship fund will be an endowed, restricted fund in which the interest income only shall be distributed for scholarship use.
To establish a scholarship in your name or in honor/memory of another person, a donation or pledge of $5,000 or more is required. Once established, donations may be added to the scholarship’s principal to help it grow and last well into the future. Salem Museum’s “Then and Now” continues
SALEM — B.J. Abrams, Ruth Evans and Mary Votaw will be present from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday to greet those especially interested in former downtown businesses during the Salem Historical Society Museum’s featured exhibit, “Then and Now.” The museum will also be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m. The last tour begins at 3:30 p.m. at 208 S. Broadway Ave. Abrams and her husband operated Tennille’s and Kolby’s department stores. Evans worked at Strouss Hirshberg and Daniel E. Smith Jewelry. Votaw was a long-time employee of J. C. Penney and Penny Alley. Evans is also a former employee of Troll’s Jewelry located at 581 E. State St.
