Retired Marine colonel to speak at Veteran’s Day event

SALEM — Salem resident Colonel Brian M. Kennedy, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, will speak during the Salem Historical Society’s Veterans Day presentation at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 in the meeting room of the Dale Shaffer Library. His topic is titled, “Leadership in the 21st Century — What’s Changed?”

Kennedy graduated from Poland Seminary High School and is a 2006 Distinguished Alumni. After earning a degree in civil engineering from Ohio State University, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marines in 1989.

He served as a Marine AH-1W cobra gunship helicopter pilot around the world — North Africa, Europe, Middle East, Haiti, Cuba, USA, – and most recently served with the Third Marine Division in Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Australia.

He served two flying tours in Iraq and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat Distinguishing Device for Valor.

He flew more than 220 combat missions and was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. A former Marine Light Attack Helicopter squadron commander, Kennedy holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and leadership certificate from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

He retired in 2014 after completing 25 years of uniformed service. He is the executive director for Turning Point Counseling Services in Mahoning County, sits on the board of AMVETS National Service Foundation Charities.
