JA Bowl-a-thon set Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN — Junior Achievement (JA) of Mahoning Valley’s largest fundraiser of the year is the JA Bowl-a-thon scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Wedgewood Lanes, 1741 S. Raccoon Road. This year’s theme is “Lights, Camera, Action!” Attendees will dress as their favorite movie or TV character for a chance of winning additional prizes.
Employees from General Motors Lordstown Complex, United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 1112, UAW Local 1714, Chemical Bank, Huntington National Bank, Youngstown Business Incubator and Hill, Barth and King LLC will participate. A total of 30 teams and over 140 bowlers are expected.
Auditions for “Rock of Ages” begin Sunday night
SALEM — The Salem Community Theatre has obtained the rights for the smash musical hit, “Rock of Ages” and will perform this production in June as a director’s special presentation. Auditions begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the theater. Those interested in auditioning who cannot make that date are asked to call the box office at 330-332-9688 or leave a message on Facebook for a special audition date and time. Musical Director Bret Cowden has asked anyone auditioning to come ready to sing a verse and chorus from a rock song from the 80’s or 90’s. Songs featured in the production are hits from Bon Jovi, Poison, Pat Benetar and Journey. Show dates are June 30, July 1, 7 and 8.
Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper set
LEETONIA — The Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 29 Spruce St. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for ages 5 to 12. Proceeds will benefit Teresa Vest’s medical expenses.
Medication Assistance offered
LISBON — A representative from the Medication Assistance Program will be available from 10 a.m. to noon March 1 at the First United Methodist Church, 114 E. Washington St. This program is open to anyone who is uninsured or underinsured, regardless of age. Attendees are to bring their medication bottles. Help with Medicare Part D problems is also available.
Stuffed pepper drive-up dinner planned at St. Jude
COLUMBIANA — St. Jude’s Women’s Guild is sponsoring a stuffed pepper drive-up dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. or until gone March 2 at St. Jude Activity Center, 180 Seventh St. Cost is $8. Winona Area Historical Society
to meet March 2
WINONA — The Winona Area Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 2 in the restored Friends Meeting House in Winona. Guest speakers for the evening will be Kevin and Sarah Swope of Heritage Lane Farm. Originally settled around 1830, the farm is located two miles south west of Winona. The Swopes will highlight some of the farm’s history as well as discuss their current operation. They raise bison, sheep, specialty produce and cut flowers on the 52-acre farm.
Remove decorations at at Grove Hill Cemetery by March 10
HANOVERTON — March 10 is the deadline to remove all winter decorations at Grove Hill Cemetery. Any remaining items will be discarded.
Vendor tables available for yard sale in Memorial Building
SALEM — Vendor tables are available for the Salem Memorial Building Association’s annual spring indoor yard sale to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 8 in the gym at the Memorial Building, 785 E. Leetonia Library joins “1000 Books before Kindergarten” program
LEETONIA–The Leetonia Community Public Library is joining the “1000 Books before Kindergarten” program. Reading logs will be available at the library to keep track of your child’s book count. Parents or others can read to the children while they are too young to read on their own. Participants can read the same book five times or read five different books to get credit. Trail Run Challenge planned
at Mahoning Career Center
CANFIELD–The Academy of the Arts students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will hold the first annual PI Day Trail Run Challenge March 18 on the school campus. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the race will kick off at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 if you register before, and $30 the day of the race. T-shirts are guaranteed to all participants pre-registered by March 4 and a free pie will be given to every runner that finishes. Beloit fish and chicken fry goes green
BELOIT–The Beloit fish and chicken fry scheduled for March 3 is going green. In cooperation with the Mahoning County Green Team’s Rural Recycling Education & Awareness Program (RREAP), the dinner will be a zero-waste event. Through a grant from the USDA, RREAP is providing reusable and compostable dinnerware that will be managed by RREAP personnel and community volunteers. After the dinner, all of the compostable material will be processed at local facilities and the finished product will be donated to community gardens.
Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. at Beloit Fire Station #1 located on Fifth Street. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children aged 6-12. Children 5 and under eat free. For those unable to attend this zero-waste event, carry-out will be available in compostable containers.
