Breast cancer benefit set Saturday

SALEM — A breast cancer benefit for Shannon Sauerwein will be held on Saturday at the Salem Elks Lodge, 824 E. State St. Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m., a Chinese auction and raffle at 6:30 p.m., and a cash bar from 4 to 11 p.m. Music will be provided by Blended Reality Band from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 5 to 10. Carryouts are available for $8. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at Pure Pet and the Elks Lodge in Salem, Layered Edge in Lisbon, D’Lux Motors in Columbiana, or by calling Michele Fisher at 330-277-1110 or Kelly Sauerwein at 330-507-2021. Fundraiser to aid fire victims

SALEM — The public is invited to a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction fundraiser from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Tri-County Church of God, 139 S. Broadway Ave. Cost is $10 for adults (12 and older) and $5 for under 12. Proceeds will benefit the family of Jennifer Hardy and Mark Rishel who had a house fire on Jan. 27. Spaghetti dinner benefit planned

EAST ROCHESTER — An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner benefit and bake sale will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday at New Alexander Christian Church, 7665 Rochester Road. Proceeds will benefit Charlee Hahn who is recuperating following complications of surgery.

The meal includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for up to age 10. Carryouts are available.

SL art, music students show talents

SALINEVILLE — Art and music students at Southern Local Junior/Senior High School will showcase their talents during upcoming events. Students in Laurie Ronshak’s art class will take part in the Columbiana County Educational Service Center Art Show (CCESC) on March 2 at the Columbiana County Career Technical Center in Lisbon. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and features original works from students in grades kindergarten to 12 which will judged according to visual arts standards set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. According to the CCESC, one piece from each show will be chosen to add to the ESC gallery. Awards will be presented. The top five students from each grade range will be awarded according to best of show, reserve best of show or honorable mention. The best of show artist of each grade level will have an opportunity to have their work included in the CCESC permanent art gallery and receive a $25 honorarium.

Attending are eighth-grader Zachary Halfhill, freshman Madison Paxson, sophomore Jasmine Earich Vietmeier, junior Megan Haught and senior Alysha Zwick.

Mile Branch Grange soup sale set

ALLIANCE — Mile Branch Grange will hold its monthly drive-thru soup sale from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out March 9. Cost is $6 per quart. This month’s selections are loaded baked potato soup and stuffed pepper soup. This will be the final soup sale for the season. The grange is located at 495 Knox School Road. To reserve soup call 330-821-8023 and leave your name, phone number, type of soup and number of quarts requested.

Drive-by dinner planned in Leetonia

LEETONIA– Leetonia First United Methodist Church at 50 Lisbon St. will host its monthly drive-by dinner from 4-6 p.m. or until sold out March 16. The meal includes a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie. To reserve a dinner call 330-427-6856 between 2 to 4 p.m. and leave your name, phone number, how many dinners requested and pick-up time.

Canal topic at Lepper Library

LISBON — Lepper Library will host a representative from the Sandy and Beaver Canal Association who will present “The Sandy and Beaver Canal Through Lisbon” program by Doug Bacso at 6 p.m. March 16. On Jan. 11, 1828, the Sandy and Beaver Canal Company was incorporated with headquarters in New Lisbon. This program will highlight the path the canal took through the village of New Lisbon.

Other topics covered include: prominent village residents who were instrumental in the planning and development of said canal; village businesses that supplied resources toward the building of the canal; and Lisbon businesses that were located along the canal.

Students can compete in Congressional show

MARIETTA — Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) recently announced that high school students in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio residing in the Sixth Congressional District are eligible to participate in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”

“I truly enjoy this annual competition because it illustrates the extraordinary talents the young people of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio have to offer,” said Johnson. “I always look forward to viewing the artwork produced by our students, and I encourage all interested schools and students to showcase their work.”

The winning student-artist will be invited to Washington, D.C. to take part in a national reception, and have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Runners-up will have their artwork displayed in Rep. Johnson’s Marietta, Salem, Cambridge, Ironton, or Washington D.C. offices. All high school students living in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio can participate, regardless of where they attend high school: public, private, home school, or online school.

All artwork must be no larger than 26x26x4 inches including the frame, and can weight no more than 15 pounds. The artwork should be original in design, concept, and execution. Acceptable media include:

Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolors

Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers

Collage

Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

Mixed media: use of more than two media such as pencil, ink, watercolor

Computer-generated art

Photography

All submissions are due by April 27 and can be either mailed or delivered in-person to Rep. Johnson’s Marietta, Salem, Cambridge, or Ironton District offices. The winning submissions will be determined by a panel of experts and local officials; the winners will be notified during the first week of May. This year, in addition to the panel selections, Johnson will also award a “People’s Choice” award, whereby mages of selected artwork will be posted on his Facebook page, and fans will have the opportunity to vote on a final winner. The student whose artwork receives the highest number of “likes” will be designated the winner of the People’s Choice award, and their artwork will be displayed in a district office.

Leetonia story time moved back week

LEETONIA – Miss Lindsay’s Special March Story Time at the Leetonia Community Public Library will be held on March 9 instead of March 2. The time will be 5:30 p.m. as usual. Preschoolers are welcome.
