Special tours set at Freedom Hall

Pictured is Jeanne Martinelli, Salem Historical Society docent, being recorded by WKBN personnel during their visit in January. In celebration of Black History Month, the society will offer three special tours of Freedom Hall from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22; 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 26; and 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28. Included in the tour is the history of Salem’s involvement in the Underground Railroad in assisting escaped slaves on their journey of freedom to Canada; notable freed slaves who lived in Salem such as Strotter Brown; and 20th century families and individuals that contributed to the rich history of Salem. As part of their feature on Black History in the Mahoning Valley, WKBN visited the museum for documentation of the history found in Salem. A 30 minute presentation was aired over its affiliate network, FOX WYFX, on Feb. 18. To see a three-minute summary on WKBN.com search for hidden history. Among items on this topic available at the museum is the book “A Salute to Black History” consisting of 27 articles by Lois Firestone and others. Freedom Hall is located on Shaffer Way off of East Pershing Street. Admission for this tour is $5 for adults, $2 for ages 5-17. For more information call 330-337-8514. (Submitted photo)
