Mill Creek Park roads open Friday

YOUNGSTOWN — Effective Friday, the following roads in Mill Creek Park will re-open to vehicular traffic: High Drive, between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive; and Calvary Run Drive, between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue. Due to maintenance work on West Gorge Trail, Chestnut Hill Drive, between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur will remain closed until further notice.

Always use caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads. “Beauty of Glass” topic at Salem Library

SALEM — Jessica Trickett will present “Form and Function: The Beauty of Glass” at 6:30 p.m. March 27 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. Also featured during the talk will be practical tips for cleaning and maintaining glassware. Registration is required at the library, salem.lib.oh.us or 330-332-0042. The free program is open to the public. Trickett is the Anne Kilcauley Christman memorial collections manager at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society of Youngstown. As collections manager she oversees the collections department and develops museum exhibits and public programs. She has presented lectures to local civic organizations exploring a variety of themes in local history. She holds a master’s of arts in history and a certificate in Historic Preservation from Youngstown State University.

Community Center marks Learn to Swim Month

SALEM — April is Adult Learn to Swim Month and the Salem Community Center (SCC) will part in this national safety program. United States Masters Swimming (USMS) recognizes the need for adults to learn how to swim to eliminate their risk of drowning and encourage healthy lifestyles for themselves and their families. The SCC offers swim lessons and numerous programs to area residents of all ages. Hundreds of individuals have taken part in various levels of instruction and competition since the facility opened in 2002. The SCC will be offering discounted class rates and private lessons during the month of April for adults in an effort to celebrate Adult Learn-To-Swim Month. Private lessons may be scheduled by calling Shane Harding, director of aquatics, at 330-332-5885. Beginner Swim 101 classes are instructed by Barb Clary, USMS Ohio Masters Swim Team member and USMS adult learn-to-swim certified instructor.

Tuesday Morning Swim 101 Class, 11-11:45 a.m. April 11, 18, 25.

Wednesday Evening Swim 101 Class, 6:30-7:15 p.m. April 12, 19, 26.

Special discounted cost is $5 per class for SCC members and $7 per class for non-members.

Private Lesson Marathon, noon to 5 p.m. April 26.

SRMC to offer Summer Teen Volunteer Program

SALEM — Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Summer Teen Volunteer Program is offering a unique opportunity for area teenagers to spend part of their summer helping others. The hospital is currently accepting applications for the 10-week program, which runs from June 6 to Aug. 18.

This program provides teens with an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to the healthcare field, provide a service to the community, earn required service hours for school and gain experience for resumes and college applications.

Summer teen volunteers will assist in various capacities at SRMC, with a minimum requirement of 40 service hours. After every 20 hours completed, volunteers will be eligible to shadow an SRMC staff member or clinical professional.

Teen volunteers must be at least 14 years of age by June 6 and be registered for high school or college with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Applications, including a letter of recommendation, are to be submitted by May 9.

South Range Jazz Ensemble to perform in Warren

BEAVER TWP. –The South Range High School Jazz Ensemble will join several other valley high school jazz ensembles to perform in honor of Jazz Appreciation month at 6 p.m. April 6 at the Packard Music Hall in Warren. The concert will feature jazz ensembles from a variety of local school districts, as well as the “Big Band Sound of Packard.” Admission to the event is free to the public.

Elder Law attorney offers consultations

SALEM–An Elder Law attorney will be available for one-on-one consultation from 2 to 4 p.m. April 12 at Essex of Salem II, 250 Continental Drive, Salem. Fourth Thursday Banquet in Salem set

SALEM — The Fourth Thursday Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. The meal will be sponsored by United Dairy Farmers. The menu offers sloppy joes, augratin potatoes, baked beans, applesauce, fresh vegetables and fruit and ice cream sundaes. Additional sponsors are needed.
