TOPS 777 hosts spring awards night

SALEM — TOPS Chapter 777 hosted its spring awards night on April 19. Shirley Johns and Carrie Toy announced Division Three winners were Peggy Mix and Mabel Pasco who tied for first place. Brenda Adams was the first-place winner in Division Four. Recipients received a scale trophy.

KOPS honored by Adams and Twila Shoaff were Johns, Carol Oliver and Frances Valentino.

The program, “Crusin’ with TOPS” was presented by Linda Evanoff.

Linda Gerace’s KOPS inspiration was read. KOPS winners each received a gift of candles, holders and pens. Johns presented the Jean Rhodes Memorial Award to Shoaff who was the best loser the most times in a year. Adams was recognized for perfect attendance for one year.

Evanoff offered a thank you for club helpers and leaders’ speech.

Door prizes went to Edna Anderson, Joann Sanor, Adams and Gladys Landsberger.

Carrie Toy read the inspiration, “Each Day is a New Day.”

Gerace and Johns were recognized as quarterly KOPS at the April 5 meeting. Pasco was the TOPS winner.

Seven & One Club visit Dutch Village

SALEM — Members of the Seven and One Club dined at Das Dutch Haus in Columbiana in March and enjoyed visiting with each other until the restaurant closed. Prior to dinner the women shopped at Das Dutch Cupboard. Members and their husbands also met at The Links in Columbiana in March to celebrate their friendship at the club’s 53rd anniversary. Monthly meetings will resume now that a member has returned from her winter getaway in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Members met earlier this month at the home of Mrs. Ken Kaufman in Petersburg. Her daughters, Mrs. Tom Mercure and Mrs. Eric McElroy, were guests. After lunch members played cards and prizes were awarded to the following: Mrs. John Hively, first place; Mrs. Fred Weingart, second place; Mrs. Jack Bruderly, low; and Mrs. Mercure, travel. Cake was served and members discussed their Easter plans. The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. May 17 at the Bruderly home.

MC Jr. Fair Board sets picnic, training

CANFIELD–The Mahoning County Junior Fair Board met April 20 and made plans for the Junior Fairboard Picnic and Training May 19 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Pictures will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the picnic and mandatory training sessions. President Karl Reph announced that an invitation would be extended to the Canfield Senior Fair Board and the 4-H Livestock Committee.

Some of the training sessions will include texting and driving led by the 4-H Carteens, special needs service training, how to fill out applications and forms for 4-H and Junior Fair scholarships, and lastly a job fair which will teach the members of Junior Fairboard about the various jobs and activities they can assist with during the fair. Following the training sessions, there will be team building activities to help the members form a cohesive team.

After the meeting the members voted on their favorite T-shirt design for this year’s fair.

Damascus Ruritans learn club history

DAMASCUS–The Damascus Ruritans met recently in Damascus United Methodist Church fellowship hall with 24 members and eight guests in attendance. Dinner was prepared and served by the ladies of the church.

Pastor John Ryser led the group in the singing of a verse of “America” and also gave the invocation.

The members approved the March secretary and treasurers reports as submitted. Acting Secretary Darlene Snyder called the membership roll.

President Dave Wingett welcomed all the guests and gave a overview of the history of National Ruritan and Ruritan in Ohio. He mentioned the Ruritan motto is “Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.” He explained the duties of the club officers and extended an invitation for each of the guests to request membership into the club if they felt the desire.

Wingett welcomed two officers from the Goshen Police District, thanking them for their service to the community and presenting them with 10 Rudy Bears for them to use in cases where children have been in accidental situations, helping to calm them down.

Vice President Tom Boozs announced 182 total community service hours submitted by members for the month of March.

Board recommendations were approved by the membership which included a financial donation to the West Branch Academic recognition banquet and funds to purchase 10 extension grabbers for highway clean-up. Al Milliken spoke about the upcoming Flag Retirement Ceremony, being scheduled around Flag Day in June, the date to be announced.

Lori Wallace reported the next blood drive would be May 9 at the Damascus United Methodist Church.

Walt Lautzenheiser spoke about the club’s fifth annual antique car show scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 in the north parking lot of the Damascus Friends Church. His committee will be meeting soon.

The meeting closed with Wingett leading the members in the Pledge Of Allegiance to our Flag.

Kiwanis antique, craft show July 15

SALEM- The 53rd annual Salem Kiwanis Antique and Craft Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 15 at Centennial Park on the corner of East Pershing Street and Park Avenue.

Admission is free to the public. This year’s show will feature food vendors, music and more then 70 auction items and baskets to be raffled.

Dealer and vendor spaces are now being accepted at a cost of $75 for a 25-by-25-foot space. Contracts can be printed off at clubrunner.ca/salemkiwanis. For information call 330-332-7748 or 330-332-5145.

Deerfied dance Monday canceled

DEERFIELD–The Deerfield Historical Society’s first Monday dance, May 1, is cancelled due to the election on Tuesday. The next dance will be on the third Monday, May 15.

SALINEVILLE– The Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department’s annual auction starts at 2 p.m. May 20 at 18371 Steubenville Pike Road. For information call 330-831-5719 or 330-205-4882.

R-Weigh honors most weight loss

SALEM–R-Weigh met on April 24 at the First Friends Church with the meeting being called to order by Rosemarie Martinez. The meeting was started with the R-Weigh prayer led by Jeanne Munnell Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and singing “My Darling Clementine” chosen by Martinez. Donna Greenamyer gave the treasurer’s report. Patty Pim told her joke and Eugenia Tullis read the secretary’s minutes. Ruth Miller prayed for needs of the group and some of their friends and family.

There were 30 members present to weigh in. The good loser in Group 1 was Rhonda Moffett and Linda Green good loser was Jodie Gutherie. Honorable Mention went to Jeanne Munnell, Rosemarie Martinez and Nancy Stryffler. Group 2 Honorable Mention was Chris Learn and Peggy Billett. New Member good loser was Linda Green.

Calorie Chart winner was Jeanne Munnell, Linda Green, Rosemarie Martinez and Jodie Gutherie. Goalie Calorie chart winners were Ruth Miller and Wilma Grams. Goalie Can Do award went to Linda Lude and Eugenia Tullis. Four weeks of losing went to Rhonda Moffett.

Peggy Kurtz inspiration was “It is My responsibility for my weight loss.”

“Whether you have a few pounds to lose or more, your journey is a life long one as you work to permanently change your poor eating habits. Control your emotions, don’t let it control you. You can only control yourself and make your own changes. Do you find yourself making excuses about your eating habits? If you do, you are just delaying the real satisfaction of having control. Take control and chose to lose,” she said.

The Rabbit contest pay was given out with the winners being: Peggy Billett, Andrea France, Donna Greenamyer, Jodie Gutherie, Chris Learn, Rosemarie Martinez, Rhonda Moffett, Patty Pim, Sara Smith, Colleen Wafler and Ginger Yost. The Goalies were Eleanor Bilsky, Rita Cecil, Wilma Grams, JoCarol Gray, Lisa Smith, Peggy Kurtz, Linda Lude, Ruth Miller and Jessie Rea.

It was pay day so the winners in Group 1 were Jodie Gutherie, Rosemarie Martinez, Rhonda Moffett and Patty Pim. Group 2 winners were Linda Green, Donna Greenamyer and Chris Learn. Goalies were Janel Anderson, Sharon Bigalow, Wilma Grams, Rita Cecil, Lisa Smith, Peggy Kurtz, Linda Lude, Ruth Miller, Jessie Rea, Eugenia Tullis and JoCarol Gray. The best loser in Group 1 was Rhonda Moffett, Group 2 was Chris Learn and Goalie was Eleanor Bilsky.

Next week the flower contest starts.

The recognition dinner has been changed to May 15.

The meeting was dismissed by singing the fellowship song.

R-Weigh meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays at the First Friends Church on Jennings Avenue. Weigh ins are from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.
