Salem Schools Buildings Committee to meet Friday
SALEM — The Salem City Schools Buildings and Grounds Committee will meet at noon Friday in the Administration Office.
Defibrillator/CPR class offered at United High
HANOVERTON — A Heartsaver Automated External Defibrillator/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (AED/CPR) first aid class will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the United High School library. “Soup N Salad” offered at Deerfield Masonic Hall
DEERFIELD — “Soup N Salad,” hosted by Palmy Chapter #114 Order of the Eastern Star, will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Deerfield Masonic Hall, 2380 state Route 225. Cost is $6 per person and includes your choice of tomato basil, minestrone, vegetable, potato, and sausage tortellini with salad, crackers, breads, dessert and beverage. Carryouts are available. Proceeds are used to assist the chapter’s operating expenses and philanthropic efforts which include the Back Door Pantry at the Palmyra United Methodist Church, Southeast/Maplewood Scholarship Fund, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and Masonic Dyslexia Centers.
Boy Scout spaghetti dinner fundraiser set Saturday
SALEM — Dine-in, carryout or drive-thru will be available during Boy Scout Troop 2’s 10th annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway Ave. The public is invited from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $8 per person. Tickets are available in advance by calling Bill Goodchild at 330-429-3987. Tickets will also be sold at the door on Saturday.
Donations collected at Men of Faith breakfast
COLUMBIANA — The Big Reach truck will collect donations at Das Dutch Haus during this month’s Men of Faith breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday. Attendees are asked to leave their donations at the back of their vehicle and they will be picked up. Cost is $10 which includes the buffet, beverage and tip. Wilbur Kurtz’s Day will be observed and speaker Bob Pavlich will present “Holy Boldness.”
Small Wonders! fall fair rescheduled for Sunday
COLUMBIANA — Area residents are invited to a fall fair from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Small Wonders! Discovery and Learning Center, 603 W. Park Ave. Over 20 area vendors, businesses and organizations will attend featuring food trucks, face painting, 50/50 raffle, family fall photos, a pumpkin patch and Chinese auction. Special appearances are planned by Straw the Scarecrow and D.J. Dan Smith.
Small Wonders will sell baked goods and beverages. All proceeds will benefit the Small Wonders Scholarship Fund. For more information visit smallwonderslearning center.org/scholarship-fund.html. The event was originally scheduled for Oct. 15 but canceled due to inclement weather.
Salem student in spotlight at YSU recital
YOUNGSTOWN — Edward Butcher of Salem will be one of 15 student musicians in the spotlight when Youngstown State University’s (YSU) Dana School of Music presents a recital by Kathryn Thomas Umble’s Flute Studio. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Bliss Recital Hall on campus.
Butcher, majoring in Music Performance Jazz at YSU, will perform on percussion. The group will perform a repertoire that includes both classical and contemporary selections from composers Gaubert, Clarke, Telemann, Taktakishvili and Bolling, among others.
Parking is available in the M30 Wick Avenue parking deck via Walnut Street for a nominal fee. Patrons are advised to watch for posted detours as construction progresses on Wick Avenue. For more information call the office of community engagement and events at 330-941-2307.
Salem Seniors to host Halloween party Oct. 25
SALEM — Salem Area Senior Citizens will host its Halloween party at noon Oct. 25 at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Yearly dues are due.
Breakfast buffet offered at Salem Masons
SALEM–A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Oct. 28 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.
The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.
Craft show set at Our Lady of the Lakes
LAKE MILTON — Our Lady of the Lakes Womens Guild is sponsoring its third annual Christmas Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at Our Lady of the Lakes, St. Catherine Family Center, 1254 Grandview Road. Admission and parking are free and handicap accessible. The event includes a 50/50 raffle and food.
Blood screening offered Nov. 11 at SRMC
SALEM — Area residents can learn more about their health by participating in a comprehensive blood screening on Nov. 11 sponsored by Salem Regional Medical Center’s Laboratory Services and the SRMC Internal Medicine Center. The screening event will be held at the SRMC Internal Medicine Center, 2020 E. State St., Suite C.
Comprehensive blood screenings can help to identify many health problems in their earliest stages, when they are most treatable, and may detect conditions such as high cholesterol, anemia, infections, diabetes and other disorders.
The cost of the comprehensive screening is $40. Participants may add a prostate specific antigen screening to their comprehensive panel for an additional $10; or an HgA1C diabetes screening for an additional $25. A lipid profile only, which measures cholesterol levels and is included in the comprehensive screening, is also available for $10.
