Mill Creek Park closes roads for winter

YOUNGSTOWN — Effective Friday, the following roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic for the winter: Chestnut Hill Drive between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur; High Drive between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive; and Calvary Run Drive between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue. Hand in Hand Africa fundraiser set

SALEM — A fundraiser for Hand in Hand Africa will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Salem AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave. There will be a bake sale, Chinese auction and 50/50. Food will be available for purchase.

Regan Crosser of Salem will be traveling to Masaka, Uganda, this summer with Hand in Hand Africa. This organization was brought to her attention through a close friend, Alexis Cresanto, and her mother, Melanie Cresanto. The Cresantos founded Hand and Hand, a non-profit organization that partners with Divine Soccer Ministries to bring street children the opportunity to experience love, companionship,and most importantly, a place to stay.

Salem board of education to meet Monday

SALEM — The Salem Board of Education’s special meeting to review board goals begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Salem High School library. The regular meeting follows at 7 p.m. in the library.

The board will also go into executive session for the purpose of the employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion, or compensation of an employee or official, or the investigation of charges against an employee or official or regulated individual unless the employee, official, or regulated individual requests a public hearing.

SRMC Heartwalk team plans bake sale, raffle

SALEM — Salem Regional Medical Center’s (SRMC) HeartWalk Team is sponsoring a bake sale and 50/50 raffle from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 19 in SRMC’s cafeteria. A variety of homemade treats will be available for purchase. Team members will also sell 50/50 raffle tickets for $1 each or six for $5.

Proceeds from the bake sale and raffle will benefit SRMC’s HeartWalk Team which raises funds for the American Heart Association’s heart disease and stroke research and prevention activities. For more information call team captain Jamie Benner at 330-337-4932.

“Stitches in Time” to meet Dec. 20 at Salem library

SALEM — All yarn crafters are invited to bring a project to work on during a “Stitches in Time” meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 20 in the Salem Public Library’s Quaker Room. No registration is required. For more information call the library at 330-332-0042.

Museum’s gift shop open for Christmas shopping

SALEM — Salem Historical Society’s Museum and Gift/Book Shop at 239 S. Lundy Ave. will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 7, 11, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 27 and 28.

Christmas Light Tours on the Quakertown Trolley begin at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Dec. 8, 15 and 19. For more information and reservations call 330-337-6733.

The public is invited to the society’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 featuring “State Theatre Carolers” and the installation of 2018 officers and trustees. The program will be held in Dale Shaffer Library meeting room. Members are asked to bring a Christmas dessert.

CAA taking applications for heating aid

LISBON — Community Action Agency of Columbiana County (CAA) is taking applications for the Winter Crisis Program through March 31 at the Lisbon office at 7860 Lincole Place (rear). Appointments can only be made by calling the automated scheduling system at 844-493-1198. Homebound customers and seniors 60 years and older may call 330-424-4013 for appointment assistance.

A limited number of walk-ins will be seen starting at 8 a.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Assistance is provided once during the season to low-income households that have had utilities disconnected, face a shut off, or heat with bulk fuel and have a tank that is at 25 percent or less of its capacity. The program can assist with home heating fuel, propane, wood, coal, regulated utilities, and unregulated utilities.

Applicants must bring the following items to their appointment: Social Security cards or birth certificates for everyone in the household, proof of any child support paid or received, and proof of gross income for the last 90 days or 12 months for all members of the household.

Applications for State Home Energy Assistance Program can be completed through May 31. Applications are available at post offices, libraries, and utility companies throughout Columbiana County. These applications must be mailed directly to the address listed on the application. For more information on State HEAP call 800-282-0880.

The office will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1 to observe the holiday season.

Beaver Township Historical Society sets open house

BEAVER TWP. — The Beaver Township Historical Society will host a Christmas open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in its exhibition room on the second floor of the former South Range high school, 11836 South Ave., North Lima. There will be light refreshments and Christmas music. The room is handicap accessible by elevator.

During the open house, the historical society will be collecting items and photographs from community members of Christmases from yesteryear that will be added to a permanent display in the room. Photographs can be scanned and returned on Saturday. The copies will be used for the display.
