Damascus Ruritans hold meeting

DAMASCUS–The Damascus Ruritan Club met Jan. 11 with 23 members and one guest in attendance. The Ladies of the Damascus United Methodist church prepared the meal.

Mahlon Griffith introduced David Peterson as a new member. President Paul given installed him into club membership and placed him on Environment Committee chaired by Jim Grimm.

The treasurer’s and secretary reports for November and December were read and approved by the members. Vice President Tom Boosz reported 289 community service hours completed by the members.

Members approved two board recommendations– monetary donations to Alchemy Acres and to the Community Hospice.

Lori Wallace, Chairperson for the club blood drives, announced she is planning a meeting with church trustees and the Red Cross prior to the next blood drive. The Five Community Service committees met together to plan what their committee would be doing in the coming year.

Given adjourned the meeting with the members reciting the Pledge Allegiance the Flag.

Garden club meets, discusses business

DAMASCUS–For its first meeting of the new year, the Damascus Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of Ohio Inc., met at the Damascus Pearce House on Feb. 8. President Marilyn Wingett welcomed the 10 members present and extended birthday greetings to those celebrating in January and February. The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved, as was the treasurer’s report. Members who have not paid dues for 2018 were reminded to do so.

Committees gave reports. Community Care reported that MaryLynn Cameron will provide the bud vases for the March Red Cross community blood drive, and a thank-you was given to those who helped with the removal of Christmas decorations at the Pearce House and the park. Sandy Kilmer from Financial Review reported that the yearly audit showed the records in good order. Sunshine Chair Darlene Lane reported that good wishes cards have been sent to several members. Dave Peterson agreed to chair Ways and Means for the year. A collection for the Penny Pines project was taken.

Under old business, Kilmer reported that the post office fencing placement is still being reviewed. Val Knoedler, with a second from Carol Kuner, motioned to send a thank-you to Frank Meissner who supplied the electricity for the post office garden Christmas lights. The motion was unanimously passed.

Food collection for the Garden Club of Ohio Inc. Feed Ohio service project will continue in March. Peggy Stoffer motioned, with a second by Marcia Spack, to give the donations to area churches on a rotating quarterly basis. The motion unanimously passed. The type of food to be donated is to be at the discretion of each member.

The club will present two Garden Club of Ohio books featuring garden and nature themes to the libraries of Knox Elementary School and Damascus Elementary School. Wingett and Cameron will be participating in the planning of the community garden project planned for the summer. In appreciation of the aid that Justin Biery has provided the club this winter, Kilmer, with a second from Stoffer, motioned to donate to the community garden project. The motion unanimously passed. Members were reminded that the position of second vice-president is still open.

Under new business, Wingett requested that for the March meeting members bring candy for the park’s community Easter egg hunt. Seeds for the Seeds for Rwanda project may also be turned in at the March meeting.

Wingett adjourned the meeting. The program for the month was the presentation and review of the club’s 2018 yearbook.

A soup and sandwich luncheon provided by the 2018 Board of Gardeners followed the meeting.

Music Study Club to start season

SALEM–The Salem Music Study Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church education building parlor. Guests are welcome.

The club will hold a regular meeting to speak about issues relating to the club, the district conference in Dover on April 7 and a few scholarship details as they come forth soon. Following the meeting, Anna Anderson will present a program on Mozart and his many different works or exerpts. There will be refreshments after the program is concluded.

The Salem Music Study Club was organized in 1924 in Salem; it is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs.

SRMC gift shop to host open house

SALEM–The Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Look Nook Gift Shop’s Annual Spring Open House will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 8.

Customers can shop a large selection of new spring decor and merchandise, including the latest trends in apparel, purses and gifts. The event will feature a special “Egg-stravaganza Sale” with discounts of up to 50 percent off regularly priced merchandise.

An Easter basket donated by Giannios Candy Company will also be raffled off. The basket includes assorted Easter chocolate molds and eggs and a plush Easter bunny, along with a $20 Look Nook gift certificate. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or $5 for 6.

In addition, customers can pre-order their Easter baskets from the Look Nook. Baskets can be ordered in person at the shop or by calling 330-332-7252.
