Charity ox roast set at Salem Masonic Temple

SALEM — Perry Lodge #185 of the Grand Lodge of Ohio is hosting a charity ox roast and gun raffle at the Masonic Temple May 19.

The temple is located at 788 E. State St. and the doors open at 4:30 p.m., dinner is a 6 p.m. and the gun raffle is at 7:30 p.m.

Ox roast tickets, for all you can eat, are $20 per person and are sold separately and can be purchased at perrylodge.org using Paypal, Rick Sekely, the lodge’s worshipful master, said.

The special event of the day is the gun raffle which will use a “deck of cards” sales procedure depending on the number of people participating.

“We will raffle up to five guns, depending on participation,” Sekely said.

“The odds to win may be as low as one in 52.”

All attendees can also purchase gun raffle tickets for $10 each at the Ox roast. No gun raffle tickets will be sold online.

Sekely said the Perry Lodge wanted people to come to the Ox roast and “then buy a gun raffle ticket.”

The five new guns set for the raffle include a Henry .22 caliber, long rifle, big loop lever action; a Winchester Defender, 12 gauge pump with an 18-inch barrel; a Thompson Center Compass rifle, 6.5 cm; a Ruger EC9s, 9mm.; and a Smith &Wesson Bodyguard, BG-380 cal.

The winners will be issued vouchers, Sekely said, and the guns and rifles will be picked up at a designated gun dealer, pending a background checks per federal firearms license requirements.

There will also be door prizes, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing.

Sekely said three additional gun winners from a previous fund raising raffle will will be announced and they do not have to be present.

The Perry Lodge made a charitable donation this year to Columbiana and Mahoning County Special Olympics and donated 33 turkeys to the Salvation Army for Thanksgiving last year.

He pointed out there are several other groups and organizations that use the Salem Masonic Temple including the Salem Chapter #94 of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, the Omega Council #44 of the Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio, the Salem Commandary #42 Knights Templar, the Eastern Stars, and Amaranth.

He said each of these organizations supports different charities.

The Perry Lodge, for example, supports Special Olympics (and others), the Chapters of Royal Arch Masons supports Adopt America (for kids), while the Omega Council supports Camps for Diabetic Kids and Commanderies of Knights Templar supports the Eye Foundation for Kids.

The Salem Temple also holds a fund raising breakfast once a month on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Refreshments will be provided at the Ox roast with beer and wine available for purchase.
