Quakertown Super Kids

Quakertown Super Kids will hold its 13th annual Soap Box Derby on Saturday. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with the presentation of driver’s licenses to the racers by the Salem Police Department. The race is for children with disabilities who have been pre-registered. This year there are 14 racers who will compete for a chance to attend the National Super Kids Race in Akron. The race is free and open to the public. The Faithful Hearts group from the First United Methodist Church will have a concession stand. At the end of the races, the police and fire department will compete in their annual “grudge” match for bragging rights. New this year is a Rotary Race. Bruce Laraway, president of the Austintown Rotary Club, has challenged Race Director and Rotary Assistant Governor Janet Keene to a race. Races are held on South Broadway Avenue with the starting line in front of Salem City Hall. Pictured at last year’s event are, from left, a racer, Steven Demidovich of North Lima; and the “ghost” driver, Garrett Menough of Salem. (Submitted photo)
