United Local announces new school year info

HANOVERTON — United Local Junior High will hold a seventh-grade orientation at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 in the auditorium to welcome all seventh graders to the junior high when they will receive their schedules and purchase school locks.

Class schedules for students in grades eight to 12 may be picked up from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21 in the high school office.

A “freshman laptop orientation” begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 in the high school auditorium for all ninth graders and their parents.

Open house for United Local students and parents in grades seven to 12 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug 24. Students and parents are invited to meet their teachers and find their lockers and classrooms.

Huffman Memorial Scholarship fundraiser is Aug. 18

SALEM — The Run Fast Winged 5K/Dustin Huffman Memorial Scholarship fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 at the Superior Street entrance to Waterworth Memorial Park. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m.

Cost is $15 for pre-registered participants and $20 the day of the event. All proceeds benefit the Dustin Huffman Memorial Scholarship. Every year a graduating senior, who most exemplifies a “Pay it Forward” lifestyle through performing random acts of kindness, is awarded a $1,000 scholarship toward their continuing education. This scholarship is dedicated in the memory of Dustin Marshall Huffman who was known for his kindness and willingness to help others. He was an amazing athlete, winning a gold medal at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state championship along with his 4×200 teammates just three weeks before the tragic accident that took his life. This scholarship is intended to encourage others to “Respect life, work hard and help others as Dustin did.”

Maendel recognized during BW’s Ovation Festival

BEREA — Lydia Maendel of Alliance was among over 250 students whose exceptional academic work was showcased during Baldwin Wallace University’s Ovation Festival 2018.

Maendel, a graduate of West Branch High School, presented posters titled “Climate Action as a Method of Building Community Resilience in the Cleveland Neighborhood of Brooklyn Center: Analysis and Policy Recommendation” and “Economy: National Economy, Personal Finances, Attitudes about Taxes.”

This year’s 18-day Ovation Festival recognized student success in research, scholarship, experiential learning, the arts and more.

The signature event was the Day of Excellence, which featured student achievements from every school of the university. Students demonstrated their achievements by performing original musical compositions or short plays; reading original essays, stories or poems; giving video or slide presentations; exhibiting artwork; or presenting research posters.

Participants in the Day of Excellence must complete the submission process and have a faculty mentor who sponsors their work and gives approval to present.

Local students earn John Carroll University dean’s list

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Several area students have earned a place on the dean’s list at John Carroll University for the spring 2018 semester.

Students eligible for the dean’s list must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours within one semester and have a quality grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Local students include:

Beloit: Allison Harris, Jonathan Ward.

Columbiana: Conner Witherow.

Salem: Brianne Baker, Bethany Jewell.

Sebring: Christopher Clemens.

Area students earn Institute of Technology recognition

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for Rochester Institute of Technology’s dean’s list if their term grade point average is greater than or equal to 3.400, they do not have any grades of “incomplete,” “D” or “F” and they have registered for, and completed, at least 12 credit hours.

Julianna Apicella of Salem is in the game design and development program.

Marcus McClellan of East Liverpool is in the packaging science program.

Rochester Institute of Technology is home to leading creators, entrepreneurs, innovators and researchers. Founded in 1829, it enrolls about 19,000 students in more than 200 career-oriented and professional programs, making it among the largest private universities in the United States.

Baker receives scholarship at Mercy College

TOLEDO — Mercy College of Ohio awarded scholarships totaling $137,350 for the upcoming academic year. A reception was held June 12 at the Toledo Club where students were presented scholarship certificates and the donors who established scholarships were recognized.

Amanda R. Baker of Leetonia received the Mercy College Scramble for Scholarships Golf Scholarship.

Mercy College of Ohio is a Catholic institution sponsored by Mercy Health with a campus in Toledo and Youngstown. It focuses on healthcare and health science programs in both on-campus and online formats. More information is available at mercycollege.edu.

Eckenrode on dean’s list at Wittenberg University

SPRINGFIELD — Ashley Eckenrode of Wellsville was named to Wittenberg University’s spring 2018 dean’s list. She was among more than 400 students named to the list.

To qualify, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Eckenrode is an English and German major.

Montgomery achieves dean’s list at Miami University

OXFORD — Jonathan Montgomery of East Liverpool was named to the dean’s list at Miami University for the 2018 spring semester.

Montgomery is majoring in biochemistry, premedical studies.
