Salem Band Boosters to meet

SALEM — Salem Band Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school band room. Discussion items include the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser in March, the upcoming New York City trip and parade, directors and organization financial reports and student recognitions. Fish fry planned at sportsman club

WASHINGTONVILLE — The public is invited to a fish fry on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 15 through April 19 at the Beaver Creek Sportsman Club, 14480 Washingtonville Road.

The menu offers beer battered haddock or shrimp dinner at $12 for adults and $7 for ages 10 and under. Each dinner includes fresh cut fries, cole slaw and green beans. Soda, water, coffee and dessert are available for $1 each. Cost is $5 for an extra fish filet and $6 for 16 pieces of shrimp. Carryouts are available by calling 234-320-8187.

Monday Night Writers to gather

CANFIELD — The Monday Night Writers will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 43 W. Main St. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on works-in-progress. Blood drive slated in Salem

SALEM — Salem Healthcare Centers will hold an American Red Cross blood drive on Feb. 20 at Salem East, 230 Continental Drive. The public is invited to donate blood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register call Jessica Szelazek at 216-379-1234. The public is also invited to enter a soup cook-off at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Salem East. Church to host breakfast buffet

NORTH LIMA — An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet will be available from 7 to 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at the North Lima Mennonite Church, 90 Mennonite Drive. Items on the buffet will include eggs, pancakes, french toast, sausage, potatoes, homemade pastries, sausage gravy and biscuits, peppers and mushrooms, coffee, orange juice, etc. Donations will be accepted. Time capsule to be buried

COLUMBIANA — The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce will bury a community time capsule during Springtime in Columbiana on May 4. The time capsule will be buried in the “pocket park” area located on South Main Street. Residents and businesses are invited to complete an information card to place in the capsule. A $10 donation is requested for placement of an item or photo into the capsule. Information cards can be obtained by calling the chamber office at 330-482-3822 or info@columbianachamber.com. All cards and items must be submitted to the chamber office by April 1. Plans are to open the capsule in 25 years (2044). Currently, there is a time capsule located in the Historical Society museum that was sealed in 1955. It is a large aluminum globe mounted on a wooden standard and is set to be opened in 100 years (2055). The globe was on display for many years in Columbiana High School and was moved to the museum around 1979.

SPL book discussion is Feb. 26

SALEM — Salem Public Library’s Adult Book Discussion meeting begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Quaker Room. The book “Shopping, Seduction and Mr. Selfridge” by Lindy Woodhead chronicles the life of Harry Gordon Selfridge, a charismatic American who rose from a stock boy at the Marshall Field’s store in Chicago, to a partner in the business which his visionary skills had helped to create. The Book Discussion Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month and features a fiction and non-fiction reading selection. Each title may be borrowed from the library. The group is always open to new participants. No registration is required and the discussion is free. For information call 330-332-0042.

Scholarships available to students

NELSONVILLE — Students throughout Appalachian Ohio are getting ready to take the next step in their education, and scholarships are a vital part of pursuing post-secondary education. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is again accepting scholarship applications to scholarship funds at FAO. Detailed information regarding eligibility and application guidelines, as well as applications, can be found on the foundation’s website, appalachianohio.org/scholarships.

The foundation offers a variety of scholarships targeted toward students from different counties and with various interests and areas of study. Students can identify one or multiple scholarships suited to their educational plans.

All information on scholarship opportunities, guidelines, eligibility, and how to apply can be found on FAO’s scholarships page. Completed applications and all accompanying materials must be emailed to scholarships@ffao.orgor mailed with postmark on or before March 15 to the foundation’s office at P.O. Box 456, Nelsonville, Ohio 45764.

Each year, the foundation for Appalachian Ohio offers scholarships to students across the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio. In 2018, 250 Appalachian Ohio students were awarded over $450,000 in scholarships from over 280 donor-established scholarship funds at FAO.
