Banquet in Salem to feature lasagna, salad

SALEM — The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. The meal will be sponsored by the South Range basketball team. The menu offers lasagna, salad, fresh vegetables and fruit and cupcakes. Additional sponsors are needed. For more information call Patty Colian at 330-831-2169.

Salem Book Club to meet Monday at Smucker House

SALEM — Salem Book Club will hold its monthly meeting at noon Monday at the Smucker House, 271 S. Broadway Ave. Guests are welcome.

Quakertown Super Kids meeting planned

SALEM — Quakertown Super Kids will hold an organizational meeting at 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, 713 E. State St. All volunteers, sponsors, parents and interested parties are invited to attend.

Salem Music Study Club to meet Feb. 27

SALEM — The Salem Music Study Club meeting begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in the educational building beside the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Issues to be discussed include scholarships, the date of the district conference in Lisbon and the festival which was successful. Members are reminded to bring their dues to this meeting, and hopefully, all members and new members will have their special hours which will be collected throughout last calendar year.

A program after the meeting, titled “God’s Love” will be presented by member Jeff Davis. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited. The Salem Music Study Club was organized in 1924, and federated with the National Federation of Music Clubs in 1925.

“Tragedy in Ice” interactive video program set

SALEM — An interactive video program, “The Franklin Expedition: Tragedy in Ice,” begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. Attendees will participate in the examination of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition including recent discoveries and theories of the expedition. The Franklin Expedition was one of many expeditions that attempted to locate the Northwest Passage of North America. Registration is required at salem.lib.oh.us or 330-332-0042. This “Live from Anywhere” program is open to the public and free of cost.

Benefit for Matthew Post family planned at Flying Pig

SALEM — A benefit for funeral expenses for Matthew Post will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. March 2 at the Flying Pig, 175 N. Ellsworth Ave. A “pot luck” dinner will be served for $10 for ages 18 and over; and $5 for ages 17 and under. There also will be a Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing. Music will be provided by DJ Goodtimez.

Post passed away on Dec 22, 2018, following brain cancer and end stage renal failure. He leaves five children and four grandchildren. Donations to the family may be sent to Stark Memorial, 1014 E. State St., Salem 44460; or call Jen Jordan at 234-228-4148.

Salem High School Alumni scholarships offered

SALEM — The Salem High School Alumni Association is now accepting scholarship applications. All 2019 SHS graduating seniors and Salem graduates who are enrolled in postsecondary studies are encouraged to visit the SHSAA website to view the academic and vocational scholarship opportunities. Visit the SHSAA website @ http://salemohioalumni.org/scholarships.html. Applications from Salem High School students are due at 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, at the SHS guidance counselor’s office. The application deadline is noon, Saturday, March 30, for past SHS graduates who are enrolled or enrolling in postsecondary education programs. Those applications should be sent to the SHSAA office at 330 E. State St., Salem.
