New Middletown man charged in Southern Park Mall purse snatching

BOARDMAN – An elderly woman leaving the Southern Park Mall Monday had her purse snatched from her and was knocked to the ground by a 19-year-old man.

According to reports from the newspaper’s news partner, WKBN Channel 27, Jarrett Drajic of New Middletown allegedly walked behind the woman and grabbed her purse before knocking her to the ground, jumping into a nearby vehicle and speeding away.

Boardman police Detective Glenn Patton told WKBN people at the mall who witnessed the assault wrote down the vehicle’s license plate numbers and provided them to police.

The department was able to trace the vehicle back to a juvenile driver who reportedly identified Drajic. The woman’s purse and other belonging were found inside the home, which was searched after a warrant was obtained, according to reports.

Drajic appeared in Mahoning County court on Tuesday and was arraigned on one count of robbery. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 3.

The victim suffered lacerations to her knees and elbows in the attack that occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to WKBN.
