Beloit man charged for gun in fight with wife

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP- A Beloit man has been charged with felonious assault for threatening his wife with a gun following an argument about a movie.

Joshua C. Stiles, 34, 13378 Church St., was charged with the second-degree felony after officers responded to his home at 8:45 a.m. Monday where his wife reported that he had a firearm and was threatening to harm himself.

According to Lt. Rob Wittensoldner’s report, he and Cpl. Karl Balasz responded to the call, but had to stop Stiles en route on Fifth Street near Williams Avenue after his wife reported he had left the residence in his vehicle still carrying the gun.

Stiles was taken into custody, but no firearm was found in the vehicle.

Upon officers’ arrival at the home, the wife stated that Stiles had been upset because they were supposed to go to a movie the previous night but she forgot. She said he then grabbed his gun and said he was going to use it on himself, then went to their children’s room and told them goodbye. She said he pointed the gun at her temple during the altercation.

Stiles told officers that the gun was located in a dresser drawer in the rafters of his garage, where Balasz discovered the Smith and Wesson SW9VE in question. Officers also seized a gun safe, magazines with ammunition and knives from the scene.

Stiles was transported by Beloit EMS to the Alliance Community Hospital for evaluation. A warrant was issued for after his release.

He was taken into custody on the warrant at his home Tuesday afternoon and arraigned on Thursday. He faces a preliminary hearing on April 3.
