POLICE REPORTS

SALEM

— Police were called at 5:24 a.m. Monday to the 400 block of East State Street for an unsecured door at a business, but found the building secure.

— A Walmart employee advised an officer on patrol at 1:34 a.m. Monday that a man in the parking lot on the east side of the building was drinking a bottle of liquor and acting strange. The officer made contact with the man who had an open bottle of Southern Comfort liquor which he said he paid for, but then admitted he stole from inside the store. He had no money and said he needed medical attention. Fire department first responders and an ambulance responded and he was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center per his request and for a mental evaluation. The price of the liquor was $11.12, with theft charges pending.

— Police at 1:28 a.m. Monday saw a vehicle parking at Waterworth Memorial Park off Superior Avenue after park hours. The vehicle was occupied by two females who were checked for warrants and told the park hours. They then left.

— Police saw a vehicle parked in Centennial Park after hours at 11:48 p.m. Sunday. No one was found in the vehicle or in the park.

— Officers responded to the Salem Regional Medical Center emergency room parking lot at 11:10 p.m. Sunday regarding a group of people standing around and spoke with several of them who said a friend had been transported there with possible alcohol poisoning. They wanted to speak to the person who had him transported, but the person left running east on East State Street. They said they gave chase and the person jumped into a passing vehicle and fled. The person who fled had been taken to the police station and gave a statement. Two of the people at the ER gave statements, but all parties gave conflicting statements. Information will be given to the prosecutor’s office.

— A woman in the 300 block of East Third Street reported at 10:12 p.m. Sunday that she contacted a female to get in touch with the female’s father and the female then made a rude comment to her. The female was told about the complaint and both were told to have no contact with each other.

— A caller at 9:55 p.m. Sunday reported a domestic dispute at 9:55 p.m. Sunday. There was no violence, just an argument. Both parties were told to keep it civil.

— Ray Abercrombie, 35, of Berlin Center, was cited for failure to control at 9:30 p.m. Sunday after his southbound vehicle on Jennings Avenue passed through the intersection at Eighth Street without stopping for the stop sign, ran off the left side of the road at the bend, struck the back of a parked, unoccupied minivan which spun 90 degrees, struck a metal fence in a side yard on Jennings and sheared off numerous fence posts before coming to final rest. He was uninjured and declined treatment, telling police of a mechanical failure with his brakes. The damaged minivan belonged to a Jennings Avenue resident.

— A man in the 100 block of North Union Avenue reported at 8:27 p.m. Sunday that he was repainting a bicycle he recently bought in his front yard when a woman stopped and said the bicycle belonged to her son and that the man stole it. He said he just bought the bicycle off of an acquaintance who was also there. Police made contact with the woman in the 1000 block of Cleveland Street. She said she recognized the orange handlebars on the bike belonging to her son. The report said the bike on Union was not her son’s bike, but there was some question over the handlebars being similar.

— A woman in the 399 block of North Ellsworth Avenue reported at 7:44 p.m. Sunday that a man across the street was playing with lighter fluid and trying to light the sidewalk on fire. Officers spoke with the man who said he was lighting a pile of ants on fire to get rid of them. He was asked not to do that due to the dangers of fire.

— An open burning complaint was reported at 6:47 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Columbia Street. The fire department put out the fire.

— Police were called at 3:01 p.m. Sunday for a dispute between a mother and daughter in the 600 block of Franklin Avenue, but everything was calm when they arrived. The mother said her 35-year-old adult daughter went out drinking with someone she met on social media and had not shown up for a family cookout. When she arrived, the mother became upset and started yelling at the daughter because she didn’t know where she was. Nothing physical took place.

— Police assisted Perry Township with a domestic in the 1300 block of West State Street at 12:48 p.m. Sunday and remained on scene until the Perry officer arrested a female.

— Police responded to the 400 block of Ohio Avenue at 12:37 p.m. Sunday to speak with a man about his neighbor’s daughter playing with his daughter’s toys and breaking them. Officers spoke with the neighbor and said the man doesn’t want their daughter in his yard anymore.

— A possible fight was reported at Smith Oil on East State Street at 12:04 p.m. Sunday when a man was inside the store starting an argument with his girlfriend who worked there. He fled when other employees called police. He wasn’t found and they were told to call police if he returns and causes problems.

— Police were called at 11:47 a.m. Sunday to the 100 block of North Lincoln Avenue for a suspicious person. She was found a block away and said she was asking to use a phone to find her friend’s house. Officers left, then got another call about the person again near the duck pond at Waterworth Memorial Park. Officers were able to contact her mother who said she would come and get her.

— A man in the 300 block of West 10th Street reported at 9:43 a.m. Sunday that his pickup was egged overnight. He said this was not the first time and his vehicle has sustained paint damage from the eggings.

— Two vehicles were reported parked on the wrong side of the road on Highland at 8:09 a.m. Sunday. An officer spoke to a male and female and they were told they were illegally parked and moved the vehicles.

— A vehicle was towed from the lot at the KSU City Center, 230 N. Lincoln Ave., after it was reported at 7:57 a.m. Sunday that the lot was closed for resurfacing and a vehicle was still in the parking lot even though it had been blocked off. A person in charge contacted a towing service before police arrived.

— A man in the 2000 block of North Lincoln Avenue called at 6:15 a.m. Sunday to report a water line break near his house, at the end of the city water line. The water department was contacted.

LEETONIA

— Terri Lynn Fagerty, 55, Leetonia, was arrested on an active warrant out of the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office for passing bad checks after searching for her at a Honey Lane home at 6:34 p.m. Saturday.

— Sarah Elizabeth Drye, 30, Leetonia, was arrested on an active warrant out of the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office after an officer with knowledge of the warrant observed her walking along Hazel Street at 7:36 p.m. Sunday.

— Jennifer L. Clarkson, 31, Leetonia, was charged with possession of marijuana following a traffic stop at Chestnut and High streets at 11:03 p.m. Sunday in which she was a passenger. During the stop, she appeared to have a seizure, but medical personnel responding to the scene said she did not and was fine.

GOSHEN POLICE DISTRICT

— Caitlin Erin Kennedy, 24, Poland, was charged with operating a vehicle intoxicated following a traffic stop at state routes 165 and 45 at 2:14 a.m. July 31. During the investigation, 13 pills found to be Gabapentin, a prescription medication, were recovered. Kennedy provided a copy of the prescription three days later.

— Damian C. McClish, 18, Canfield, was charged with a fifth-degree felony obstructing official business and a misdemeanor failure to comply with an order after failing to stop for a patrolling officer attempting a traffic stop for speed on state Route 46 at Calla Road at 11:13 p.m. Thursday. The pursuit continued north on Lisbon Road to Leffingwell Road, back down state Route 46, westbound on Western Reserve Road, south on Washingtonville Road, and east on state Route 165, reaching speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour and failing to stop for stop signs, before ending in Greenford when a second officer blocked the road with a cruiser. McClish said he and a passenger were returning home from work in Columbiana and he fled because he panicked. A passenger was released at the scene.

— Jeffrey A. Boyd, 42, West Pershing Street, Salem, was charged with theft and criminal trespassing after a Benton Road resident reported a suspicious vehicle and someone walking around on a neighboring West Pine Lake Road home at 7:05 a.m. Friday. The officer stopped Boyd on Seacrist Road. Boyd said he had had car problems and stopped at the home to correct it, then used some gasoline out of a can since no one answered the door.

— Brendan T. Conklin, 18, Connellsville, Pa., was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign following a two-vehicle crash at state route 165 and 14 at 12:27 p.m. Friday in which he was westbound and pulled from the stop sign, striking a northbound vehicle hauling a trailer of hay driven by Steven P. Galchick, 52, Ohio Avenue, Salem. Galchick was transported by Beloit EMS to the Salem hospital with incapacitating injuries.

— An officer responded to report of guns being fired in the 12000 block of Beaver Creek Road at 12:54 p.m. Friday and found that a resident’s wife had just purchased a new handgun and they were firing it at targets in the ground. They were advised they need proper backstops to fire the weapon on their property.

— Officers assisted Sebring police with the apprehension of a suspect known to carry firearms at Johnson Road and Tennessee Avenue at 9:18 p.m. Friday. The suspect, identified as Logan John Stancato, East Fourth Street, Salem, was taken into custody and transported by a Goshen officer to the Sebring station. The driver was also transported by a Goshen officer to the Sebring station while a Sebring officer stood by with the suspects’ vehicles.

— An officer responded to a Derr Avenue home at 1:16 p.m. Saturday in reference to a domestic dispute in which the resident reported his juvenile son had gotten angry at him regarding house chores and that the son is dangerous when angry. The officer spoke with the son and advised him against his actions.

— An officer responded to a 13000 block Main Street, Beloit, home at 2:15 p.m. Saturday where a caller said her children were with their father and he had blocked her calls despite the court saying she could call them while they are with him. She was advised that the matter is civil and to contact the courts.

— A concerned citizen approached an officer at the Goshen police station at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in reference to potholes on Goshen Road. The officer contacted the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office about the issue.

— An officer responded to the area of state routes 165 and 534 at 9:31 p.m. Saturday in reference to a suspicious vehicle reported by the highway patrol, but was unable to find the suspect vehicle.

— Officers responded to the 10000 block of Washingtonville Road at 11:59 a.m. Sunday in reference to a loose pit bull. A resident reported her neighbor had three dogs, one of which was the pit bull, that run along her fence display aggressive behaviors toward her dogs. The officers spoke with the owner of the dogs, which did not act aggressively toward them upon arrival, and warned him to keep the dogs secure.

— Jordon Alexander Burgess, 17, Salem, was charged with domestic violence after officers responded to his Beaver Creek Road home at 12:44 p.m. Sunday where he allegedly made threats of punching of his foster mother during a verbal argument.

LISBON

–Police responded to a call that someone was breaking into a vehicle on North Market Street at 2:44 p.m. Saturday. Police arrived to find Darian Libert, who said he owned the vehicle and just broke one of the windows. Libert said he was going to sell the vehicle to Corbin J. Whittaker, 18, of Atwater, but changed his mind. Libert said he returned $40 to Whittaker but he would not give him back the keys, but the vehicle was inoperable anyway. Whittaker was viably upset and claimed Libert still owed him another $40. Whittaker was told to return the keys and leave with his personal property that was still in the vehicle, but Whittaker became more agitated and threatened to break some windows. The officer deliberately blocked Whittaker’s path to the vehicle and then put his foot on a hand sledge laying on the ground. Whittaker tried to grab the hand sledge he was wrestled to the ground by the officer and another officer. Whittaker was arrested for disorderly conduct.

–Kevin Armour came to the police station at 9:55 p.m. Saturday because he needed to retrieve his belongings from where he was staying on Pendleton Street, but the owner was threatening him. Police accompanied Armour back to the house but no one was home and Armour said his sister, who lives in Akron, would not pick him up until morning. Armour was able to find somewhere else to stay for the night.

COLUMBIANA

— Police were called to a home on North Main Street for a report of a loud party. Police warned the group for the noise complaint.

— Troy Smith of Salem reported at 7:24 p.m. Sunday people were riding four-wheelers on his property on North Pearl Street in Columbiana. Police checked but found no one there.
