EP man charged with assault

LISBON — An East Palestine man has been charged with assault and carrying a concealed weapon after he allegedly got into a fight at the home of another East Palestine man on Monday evening.

A Feb. 28 pretrial was set Tuesday morning in county Municipal Court for Ronald G. Barson, 53, Bacon Avenue, East Palestine, charged with assault and carrying a concealed weapon after police were called to a fight at the trailer park on West Main Street. As they arrived police saw a vehicle leaving the lot.

According to court documents, the driver of the vehicle was Barson and he reportedly had blood on his nose and forehead.

Police believe Barson pulled in front of trailer in the lot to confront Joseph Altenburg. A fight ensued and Barson pulled a golf club to use as a weapon.

When they searched his vehicle, police reportedly found a spiked club under the driver’s seat of Barson’s vehicle, where it was within easy reach. Bond was set a $5,000 cash or surety with a condition of the bond that Barson to have no further contact with the alleged victim or at the trailer park at 1005 W. Main St.

According to reports from the East Palestine Police Department, Barson and Altenburg had been involved in another altercation at the Marathon Gas Station at 5:25 p.m. on Jan. 28. Following that incident, Barson had been charged with aggravated menacing. A March 21 pretrial had been set for that previous charge and Barson was allowed to sign a $2,500 personal recognizance bond at that time, again with the bond condition that he have no further contact with Altenburg.
