No arrests in Patrol OVI checkpoint Friday

A multi-agency OVI checkpoint conducted outside Salem on state Route 45 in Perry Township Friday night from 7 to 11 p.m. resulted in no arrests for operating a vehicle impaired out of 384 vehicles stopped.

A press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Lisbon Post said the checkpoint was done in partnership with the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and Salem Police Department. The Salem Super Cruise, which attracts a lot of people and cars, has been going on since Thursday and concludes today.

Out of all the vehicles which passed through the checkpoint, only one was diverted to a secondary area. In addition to the checkpoint, troopers and area agencies worked saturation patrols in the area, resulting in 21 additional traffic stops during the checkpoint timeframe. The goal was to make motorists more aware of the impaired driver problem in Ohio, bring a reduction in the number of alcohol and drug-related crashes and to deter and intercept impaired drivers. The OVI checkpoint and saturation patrols were funded by fines from impaired drivers, along with federal funding.

“Even with the short delays, officers working the event received a tremendous amount of public support during the checkpoint and I want to thank the motoring public for helping to make our roadways safer and the checkpoint was beneficial for the public awareness and voluntary compliance,” Lt. Les Brode, Lisbon Post Commander, said in the press release.

People who intend to consume alcohol are advised to designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before drinking.

“Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired,” the press release said.
