Salem man gets year in prison for high speed chase with toddlers

LISBON — A young Salem man who drove at speeds of up to 100 mph with two small children in the stolen vehicle he was driving was sentenced to a year in prison when he appeared this week in Common Pleas Court.

Izaac Devon-Joseph Chalmers, 20, Carole Drive, Salem, will also be placed on four years community control and his license was suspended for three years, which was mandatory. He had pleaded guilty in March to charges of receiving stolen property, failure to comply to the order of a police officer, endangering children and criminal damaging.

“This could have gone horribly, horribly wrong,” Judge Megan Bickerton pointed out about the circumstances that led to the charges against Chalmers. “I understand they are not your children … but anyone in your vehicle is your responsibility.”

Chalmers admitted he was “not thinking straight” during the night of the incident. “I wasn’t caring about anyone but myself. I take full responsibility for my actions.”

On Aug. 11, instead of stopping for highway patrol Sgt. Adam Shonk, Chalmers took off in the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup belonging to Hubbard Chevrolet. The pickup had been taken from the Kingly Wash and Wax.

Chalmers drove through intersections in Salem and at times drove without headlights. He eventually crashed the vehicle near Eighth Street in Salem. He said the two children, ages 1 and 2, were in car seats. They belonged to the woman who was also riding with him when he crashed.

According to reports at the time, everyone inside the pickup were transported to Salem Regional Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.

Chalmer’s defense attorney, Kelly Linger, had asked for him to receive only the community control portion of the sentence, including up to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center. Linger noted it was his first felony as an adult, and although he has struggled with substance abuse, he has maintained sobriety recently and held down a job.
