Esther M. Mitchell

SALEM – Esther M. Mitchell, 90, of Salem, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday at her home in Salem.

She was born on May 21, 1923 in Salem, the last surviving child of Harry and Pearl (Cullen) Mitchell.

She was a lifelong resident of the Salem area. She was a member of the Salem First United Methodist Church and a 1942 graduate of Salem High School. She had been employed for 40 years at the G. C. Murphy Store in downtown Salem until it closed in 1985.

She is survived by nine nieces and nephews, Shawna Mitchell, her caregiver and with whom she lived, Michelle Lonardo of Columbus, Darlene (Daniel) Butler of Georgia, Harriet Ray of North Carolina, Donald (Deborah) Mitchell of North Carolina, John (Cindy) Mitchell of East Rochester, Jennifer Mitchell of Salem, Sam and David Lewis of North Carolina; two sister-in-laws, Leila Mitchell of Salem and Mildred Mitchell of North Carolina; and many great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by all her siblings, Elsie Lewis, Ellen, Ethel, Marjorie, Infant Jean, Edward, Glenn, Jack, Charles, Frank and Harry Mitchell.

A time of visitation will be observed from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem. A service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. P. Douglas George officiating. The burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Salem.
