Joseph W. “Joe” Duriga
SALEM Joseph W. “Joe” Duriga, 71, of West Pine Lake Road, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident while participating in the Rolling Thunder Veterans Tribute in Washington D.C. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his passing.
Mr. Duriga was born Jan. 9, 1942, in Salem, a son of the late Charles Duriga and Esther (Graybeal) Duriga, and had lived in the Salem area all of his life.
He worked as a commercial truck driver for J.S. Paris Excavating of North Jackson and was also a master farrier for 35 years, and had shod many National Champion Arabian Horses over the years.
Mr. Duriga was a member of the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk on its inaugural cruise.
Joe was a member of the American Legion, Mid Western Farrier’s Association, the American Farrier’s Association, and the Harley Owners Group (HOG). He loved to spend time with his family and will be dearly missed.
In addition to his mother , Esther Duriga of Damascus, he is survived and will be dearly remembered by his daughter, Jodene (Michael) Wheeler of Orchard Park, N.Y.; and his sisters, Betty Filban of Columbiana, Charlene (Jim) Akenhead of Marlboro and Carolyn Caldwell of Salem; as well as granddaughter, Chanoa.
He is also survived by his companion of many years, Judy (Bently) Lavalli, and her children Kimberly (Al) Rehmann of Munith, Mich., and Megan (Bo) Neville of Lisbon; stepson, Russel (Renee’) Lavalli of Apple Valley, Calif., and her grandchildren, Cody, Cassidy, Tess, Maddie, Jessica, and Desiree; as well nephew Matt Akenhead and many cousins especially Gary Wukotich and his family, as well as Richard, Allen and Rita Graybeal and many close friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
