Marie Lovell Perrott

EL CAJON, Calif. -Marie Lovell Perrott passed away on Jan. 28, 2014, at Country Hills Health Care Center in El Cajon. Marie was a few weeks shy of her 93rd birthday.

Marie was born Feb. 12, 1921, and raised in Fallen Timber, Pa. Marie and husband lived in Salem, Ohio, for over 30 years to raise their family and then to La Mesa, Calif., in retirement for the last 35 years.

Marie married Chris Perrott in 1941 in Salem, Ohio, at the First United Methodist Church where Marie was active in the choir as a soprano soloist. Marie was also active in the Salem Grange, Garden Club, and Music Society. Marie and Chris raised three children in Salem. Marie was an excellent seamstress, home re-modeler and carpenter, home decorator, collector and restorer of antiques, upholsterer, gardener, flower arranger, cook and baker. Chris was always there to assist his active wife in her numerous projects.

In 1978, Chris and Marie left Ohio and moved to La Mesa, Calif., to buy a house close to San Diego State University so their youngest child could go to college. Marie became active in the First United Methodist Church in La Mesa and in the community. She attended an adult school Spanish class with her husband Chris. Marie also joined a writing class and traded in her music career for writing. Her favorite poetic form was the sonnet.

In 1985, Marie got the shingles and had chronic neuralgia pain for the rest of her life. The shingles took her sight in her right eye. Glaucoma left her nearly blind, but even with failing eyes, she kept writing. Her youngest brother set up a talking computer, so she kept writing into her 80’s. When her eye-sight failed completely, a friend started transcribing tape recordings. In all, Marie self-published five books of poems and writings.

After a heart attack, the last 10 years of her life was spent at Country Hills with Chris visiting her nearly every day. Marie kept involved in church, a writing class and singing at the facility as long as she was able. Many wonderful ladies assisted Marie to be her eyes to keep her as active as possible. Marie went on hospice six months ago, but could recite her poems and sing songs almost to the end. She knew and acknowledged family and friends to her last day.

Marie is survived by her husband of 72 years, Chris Perrott of La Mesa; son, David Perrott (Donis) of Los Angeles; daughter, Dee Ann Heslar of Phoenix, Ariz., and daughter, Mechelle Perrott (Per Martin) of La Mesa. Marie is also survived by grandson, Steve Turney of La Mesa, granddaughter, Christine Lewis (David); great-grandchildren, Sophia, William and Emmet Lewis.
